|
|
I haven't found any discussion on this matter.
I have a bust 6.2 Neil Pryde sail - I don't need it repaired, I have plenty more, and it was given to me. It has a big tear in the largest panel, and less critically, a hole near the top of the mast sleeve. The bag has a tear around the zipper too.
Is it worth keeping for parts (battens, pulley), or for someone else to repair, or should I just bin it?
Thanks!

Main mono panels normally cost about $90 to replace. Hole in top of sleeve, it the mast doesn't poke thru, might spread, so sewing it costs about $30.
Leave it for some poor windsurfer who can't afford new gear.

I guess a lot depends on the tear and what caused it. Often monofilm just gets old and there's little value in maintaining the sail. However, getting to your question, it there any reason to save what might be considered viable leftover components for the future?
Over the years I have saved tons of components from sails. Have I ever used any of it? In all honesty, no, and I was dedicated to a brand for over 20 years. Often components are specialized year to year, so little can be carried over successfully. Nevertheless, I still suffer from a bit of that pack rat mentality. I still have lots of crap from another time in history.
Anyone interested in Windwing battens from the late 80s and 90s?

Rig 'em on masts you don't trust and use them for deck umbrellas, Mine have been up for over a year now, cool looking and functional. I've got two overlapping, one dacron, one xply for the perfect combo of light and colour.

A deck you can use? Luxury! My desk is full of windsurfing gear, and in any case never gets the sunshine. And even if it did, it overlooks a train station, so way too noisy to sit out there.

It was about 10 years ago, at least, but with a collection of used up sails and a bunch of used up masts (many of them Ampros), I built an awesome teepee for my daughter.

Here's the best thing for old burnt-up sails, keeps them out of the loop so some poor beginner doesn't buy it at a swap:
