Funny thing...
Almost every single one of my friends who spend time in a walking boot sail barefeet. Of course, they are practicing freestyle moves, while my bootie friends just go back and forth.
The difference could be loose straps and constant spinny moves vs tighter straps and nothing new.

Like freestylers with loose straps don't frequently bust up their feet, ankles and knees? Besides, spinny tricks aren't the only way to depart from BAFing.

check into this series of how-to's from Guy Cribb. Here is an example of what the OP is asking about....the entry of the gybe

http://www.guycribb.com/userfiles/documents/carve%20gybe-%20the%20Approach.pdf

One can access a whole series of PDF"s that Guy published for Windsurf magazine here

http://www.guycribb.com/windsurfing_technique_holiday0065v01.aspx?awvariantid=1

Hope these help.

Most don't like booties, but in 28 years of windsurfing, I have never had cut, blister, stubbed toe or ankle/leg/knee injury wearing booties 100% of the time. Actually I did hurt my knee a bit in 1985 at the gorge, but not enough to keep me off the water.

Granted, I don't do freestyle moves from the straps and only chop hop, but I have found that fast sailing on a bump/jump or slalom board in choppy water is very unnerving without the feet being snug in the straps.

Regardless, make sure you feet are lose in the straps before initiating a gybe.

Didn't realize those were available - thanks for that. I've been watching the intuition dvd repeatedly. I've been so focused on the other movements that I just tried tipping the rig forward the other day....definitely makes a difference.

bootie tangent: I prefer barefoot, but not as much as keeping my feet uninjured...too many exits over pointy rocks, so I'm staying in booties.

Wearing booties doesn't affect or effect your jibes whatsoever, but it does take some acclimation to go from one to the other.

Had the same problem... (too many years ago to admit). Finally ditched evryones well meaning advice, and took BOTH feet out of the straps before initiating, and bam, had it in a day. At 220 lbs, and riding gorge sinkers, weight back is not my friend for keeping speed up.

Not wearing booties is simply not an option for certain areas.

Every time I walk out of the water at the Hatchery's east cove I wanna find the SOB who sharpens those rocks and have his butt fired. He's one civil servant who does his job TOO well.

maybe we should lobby to coat the rocks with rubber, rather than
our feet. ;*) I know I'd like that better than a cable park ;*) ;*)
oh wait, that's a Washington decision ;*) ;*) ;*)
