Who says windsurfing is only for people with money Very Happy Here is a setup I took out today, all (except the mast) gathered from the junk pile at the last swap meet. It worked great too, I have "modern" sails that are worse... If I had nothing else id be happy with this setup.

Yep, when you live in the area, it's pretty sweet. If I were low on
resources, that rig would work great. Even if I weren't low on resources,
that board has a sweet shape, and probably rides primo in
Gorge conditions, not to mention it looks fantastic. You know, eventually,
we're probably bound to run into each other. I haven't been windsurfing
at The Event Site in probably 15 years, but I do wander around down
there occasionally, (like last Friday). We've probably crossed paths
at a swap and didn't know it.

Most of the "new" gear that I dreamed of owning 25 years ago as a poor college student (but could never afford) is now available for next to nothing at the swap meets. It is sometimes hard to resist buying it all.

My first trip to the Gorge was in 1989, and I would have killed for a new Windance board and Northwave sail back then. All I could afford to buy at the time was a T-Shirt from each. Now I can get that same board and sail for about what the T-Shirts cost.

Your knees thank you. I doubt the '89 WD boards were any smoother-riding than their '92 version, which was beyond any doubt the roughest-riding, most pounding, harsh, hammering, shock-transmitting POS I ever rode (out of hundreds of Gorge-suitable boards I tested in that time frame). I took one round trip across the Columbia on it and aborted the test before it destroyed my knees, teeth, and hair follicles ... on a nice day at Maryhill.

Caveat: I never rode the Hypertech.

All boards ride rough when you're underpowered or overpowered for the chop.
Hypertech's were smooth riding, when you're powered up and flying the front of the board, sailing only on your backfoot thru the chop.
Setup and sail size for your sailing style is everything.
Some sailors thought Dill's were rough riding, even with the deep V, but they didn't sail correctly powered.
Lots of my smoothest riding boards were flat bottom boards.

Can't think of a worse sail than a '89 Windwing wave....to compare with more modern sails. That deep draft up top is a recipe for top heavy slow speeds, but those sails lasted foreever...unfortunately for the owner.

That doesn't seem to impede Dale Cook's speed or altitude.
