Hi Gang,

As I was starting work on the California forecasts at 5AM today the thought occurred to me how different forecasting is today compared to 20 years ago. Most of forecasting is done using models, weather balloons, profilers etc. But still a window near the bay allows you to see the height and density of the marine layer and its distribution around you.

20 years ago I was limited to my den window looking at the bay fog as I did the forecast. Now I look at dozens of cam windows ranging from Bodega to Mt. Diablo to Half Moon Bay which helps forecasting immeasurably.

The photos below show a few of these window views at 6:20AM today. Why show them today? Because the extremely deep intrusive marine layer you see in the top satellite photo has plagued the Bay Area for many days. And most of these cams will have a very different picture by Saturday as the North Pacific High returns to the coast.

Awesome Mike, thanks. Can you:

1) provide us with that series of photos everyday Smile
2) make the fog stick through the weekend so we working sailors in Rio can actually cash in on some of the wind provided by this system?!

Hi Mike,

I would gladly post more imagery about the marine layer etc. but I think most people are, understandably, more interested in finding wind than understanding what causes it.

The data suggests that this weekend some marine layer clouds will persist in the AM along the coast but will erode in the PM to just beyond the coast. This often gives Sherman Island a decent afternoon session.

Badass, Mike G.
I didn't know there was an alcatraz cam.
It's fun to know how the wind works.
On the way out to the Delta again...wahoo!

Wind every day in the East Bay? Call that a plague? Not from where I sit! Smile

Same here, definitely not a plague for Alameda, been beautifully consistent.
Thanks for the pictures and the details.

Hi Mike,

Could you please post the links to all these cams? Assuming they update, they would be a great way to monitor whitecaps/wind as the day progresses.

Thanks!

Sorry, poor choice of words for Larkspur East Bay & Sherman Island folks. It is great to see those sites blast for a change. Some of you remember the days when the marine layers average depth was over 2000 ft. much of the summer and Larkspur, San Luis, Pt. Isabel, Berkeley and of course Sherman Island were the wind hogs most of the summer!

I too would appreciate links to these cameras in a central location.
The "cams" tap on iW only lists two cams for the bay area.

That said, being an eastbay sailor the most valuable cam is the one atop the bay bridge toll plaza (showing the weekend traffic backup)!
