Mac, you are correct. One must record a loss at actual valuation in order to be credited a deduction. Even Mr. Fiction should know that. Oh, wait, he hasn't worked in years -just collects disability and windsurfs harder than anyone else.

It always amazes me when someone is criticised for following the laws of the country via the tax code.

Loopholes or tax law? One in the same. Are there tax codes that are crap? Sure and there needs to be a major overhaul.

How many of you, with or without the help of a tax expert would NOT take advantage of all the allowable deductions and "loopholes" in our tax code to reduce the amount of taxes paid including off shore accounts, etc.?

If you have to bitch, focus on the IRS and the government, not those that follow the law. If you don't like the law, vote for someone who will change it. Remember 9-9-9?

This is the reason Romney doesn't want to offer up all of his past tax returns, he wants to avoid being manhandled by the liberals for simply following the law, case in point.

Well said Techno. If anyone has any evidence to suggest that this is not entirely in compliance with the tax code, or not disclosed, let's see it. More obfuscation to distract from the real issues.

The left half of the U.S., not to mention the IRS, has justifiably tried for years now to prove any attempt by Romney to illegally dodge any taxes, to no avail. It's a diversion tactic, as you say, not a genuine concern. Obama bumper stickers may as well read, "Anything but the economy, stupid".

And those things that the rich Mitt would do to make the tax code fairer and still fiscally sound are? Still waiting....

But I like his touch with the common man--and the prancing horse. That must be where the horseshit from the right originates.

Why won't Romney disclose more years of tax returns? Why can't a guy that supposed to be the comsummate businessman get his taxes done on time?

I don't think anyone is saying he that he did anything illegal in completing his tax returns. But most of us know quite well that disclosure and review of his tax returns would be an excellent example of how very wealthy folks use every tax advantage and loophole they can to reduce their tax liability. Also, there could be years where he paid little or no taxes.

But, apparently Romney doesn't want to be out front and transparent about such things, because he's determined that he can't afford the exposure. Folks would see him for what he really is. A very rich guy that lives a totally different world than regular folks.

The last two posts reveal far more about their authors than they do about Romney. Undisguised resentment of an entrepreneur who has achieved great success. How things have changed in this country.

Undisguised resentment? You certainly have a wild imagination mrgybe.

You may not care at all about the character of the soon to be Republican nominee for president, but I do. In my view, Romney is coming up terribly short. Maybe you can share with us all why Romney is not releasing his tax returns, and why his lack of honesty and transparency is appropriate.

Or maybe primarily on the left coast. But, no ... Pelosi is worth scores of millions, their Hollywood heroes worth far more, and they love Gates and Buffet, so it's just rich conservatives that piss them off.

And ya made me look.

Chandler, you know full well that if Romney released all his returns, even though they satisfy the IRS it's all the left would talk about from now through the year 2020.

And you're an irresponsible sap if you don't "use every tax advantage and loophole [you] can to reduce [your] tax liability", as every smart person does. The IRS encourages that, for example with the stretched IRA concept that can make an ordinary IRA worth many millions, by design and intent, by passing it on to future generations. Anyone who doesn't use this program for their grandkids' benefit is just throwing away up to eight million dollars' payoff from a meager $100,000 IRA.

And, yes, many rich people live better than most poor people. Isn't that the primary point of being rich? Do not tell me you'd rather be Chandler than rich, even if for no other reason than being able to choose whom you give money to and how much to give them .... after, of course, you pay off that first mortgage of yours. What's wrong with any of that? Isn't that opportunity a prime reason US. residency is so highly valued around the world? Did it screw up the nation that by far the richest president in our history was George W ...
as in George Washington?

Besides, even the poor in the U.S. have a far higher standard of living than the average European ... or did MSNBCNPRPBS not mention that?

The U.S. is, and must remain if it is to last, about equal opportunity, not equal stuff.
