Board , Tabou Rocket 135L, existing sail Ezzy Freeride 7.5 last years, and make very reasonable power to anything that does not have cams, huge range , typical Ezzy product, brilliant.
Here in Colorado the 7.5 takes a while to get going and need to be pumped, and then will come off the plane. Everyone else is in the same conditions, some who are a little heavier (155lb here) on 8.5s are in the same predicament, so too little sail or not enough wind.
Looking for opinions on if a 8.5m would improve things enough in similar conditions to warranty a purchase.
I would really like to not NEED a 490 mast, and have found a few 8.5ish size that recommend a 460 mast. OTOH I could use a mast extendo on my 460and have 500cm of mast .
I can see some sail recommendations coming and welcome that: masts
all 460 HotSails Maui Hot Rod, Ezzy , and SDM Powerex 100%.
Its possible to use a RDM extendo on the RDMs, which I have.
worth 500$ more or less for a 8.5ish ?? _________________ K4 fins

I sail my 7.5 all summer,, with my 140 L board. I own a 9.5 but the difference in planing is marginal, so I have used it only occasionally. Partly because, if the wind drops, dealing with the 9.5 is much more work.
I am not throwing out my 9.5 but I wouldn't spend hundreds to replace it either! |

7.5 is alot of sail U2. Maybe you need more board. Although I do want to get a 7.5 Cheetah, my 6.0 Cheetah and my 180ltr rrd LongRider was a blast last week at my local lake. Maybe 15-17 in the puffs. Someone showed up after I got off the water. He had a similair set up as you and a 6.4 and didn't get going like I did. I was kinda of suprised since he had a bigger sail and a fin as long as my leg... ok real long. _________________ The Time a Person Spends Windsurfing is not Deducted from their Lifespan...

elevation over 6000', big difference than sea level on sail size,
don't encourage me for a larger board, I might listen.
Its plenty big enough _________________ K4 fins

I went through this issue, had an 8.5, had a 9.0, didn't like it, but what I did like was getting a bigger wider board (85 cm wide) and staying with the 7.5 (Ezzy Zephyr). If you can get a used board, it is probably cheaper than getting a large sail and a 490 mast (if you don't need a longer boom). Board and big fin made as big a difference in planing threshold as a larger sail. If I was going to get a super size sail, I would get a Hot Sails Maui Superfreak UL 9.0, weighs as much as most other 6.0 sails. dhmark |

don't need a bigger boom, for a 8.5
don't think I will spend $$ on both a mast, 490, and a sail.
very familiar with Superfreaks 6.3UL the largest I have , don't see the 9.0 m version as the solution. the 8.8 Speed Demon another chapter.
I don't want a wider freeride board, but I have a option of bringing my Formula board back from Maine, its 95cm wide , and it would ??
benefit from earlier planing on a 8.5 ?
The real question is will a 8.5 VS a 7.5 plane any sooner or longer ? _________________ K4 fins

I have an Ezzy Freeride 7.5 and I'm 215 lbs. My Kona 9.0 get me on the plane close to 3 knots earlier. In my case, that's a lot more fun on the water because of the conditions I get here.
If money was not an issue, I would get a Ezzy Lion 9.5 for planing conditions, to have a sail that will not distort in strong gust and that will keep going in the lulls. I would keep my Kona for on and off the plane days. The Kona is lighter and works well as a non planing sail. It is however not very stable and is hard to hold when the strong gusts hit.
At my weight, I also think that a step from 7.5 to 9.0 or 9.5 is the proper step. To 8.5 would not be enough. |
