Mac, you are dead right about the double standard applied to Obama.
But consider this- a person is only a racist if they are a racist.
Unfair criticisms of a politician are an American tradition.
You have called Bard a rascist for such statements when he has been saying the same stuff about Bush and every other pol in his sights.
I don't think the man likes governments much.
Neither do I.
I have heard black guys unfairly put down Bush, but never thought it was racist.
Note: plenty racism out there but just bad mouthing a pol isn't sufficient to warrant that label.

KC--a thoughtful post, which I appreciate, but I have to disagree. Let's start with Techno's post. If he had simply posted an ignorant comment by an Obama appointee, and said that Obama will appoint, for political reasons, someone who is unqualified--and is therefore not much different than Bush, I would have agreed.

But the language we choose, and the bedfellows we tolerate, cannot be ignored. Techno--after defending what is in any legal system unethical behavior by the Governor of North Carolina--classified as unethical behavior what has been standard political behavior for centuries. The right wing has tolerated overt racism in their ranks without objection. I don't know if that is 1% of the right or 50%--I don't tolerate it. They have pursued, systematically, measures to control access to voting, and access to Federal funding, that are racially discriminatory--without blinking. Do I think they pursue those policies because they are overtly racist? Almost certainly not. They pursue political power--without caring whether their approaches are discriminatory. That is, in fact, racism 3.0. Their hatred of the poor is classist more than racist, but only a naif would ignore the whiff of discrimination that blows over the battlefield.

Constant invective, lack of reasons, and name calling are, in so many ways, replacing unacceptable epithets with more acceptable code words like socialist, or Muslim.

I particularly will not accept those who would chide me for my language without attending to their own insensitivity. Language, and the choice of terms, matters.

Mac,
If the fringe represents the majority, then would that mean Catholics are pedophiles?

rr-logic. The problem with the Catholic church is not that there were some pedophiles. Nor does the presence of a few pedophiles define the church. The problem with the church is that, not only did they tolerate the pedophiles, they covered up their crimes and sent them to places where they did it again and again.

The problem with the Republican party is that they tolerate the bigots--usually--and usually do not criticize them.

In the case of restricting voting rights for minorities, it is not necessary for Republicans to do so as a matter of prejudice. It is still racism to ignore the discriminatory aspects of their polices.

The old saying remains true--if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

Which is true, by constantly playing the race card, you are part of the problem.

Mac,
Logic tells me you're willing to split hairs to justify your position. My logic tells me both organizations should throw out the trash. My logic tells me that a few asses exist in every large organization but they DON'T represent the majority.

Comic relief:

Denial is not a river in Africa. By condoning racially discriminatory GOP policies, NW is in fact part of the problem.

I rent to folks who have adequate financing. Those I reject are overwhelmingly minorities. Is this inadvertent racism?
Banks do the same. Credit card companies also.
If angry old white people voted Dem the GOP would be trying to restrict them instead. This is unethical. It is only racist if the real reason is their skin color
The real reason is their voting preferences.
If that change comes in the demographic, will you believe the GOP is racist against white people? Or old people?
Every decision made among humans favors someone of one race or another.

KC--it is neither discriminatory, nor racist, to rent only to people who have money, or good credit ratings. That is a distinction made upon wealth, and while there is correlation between wealth and race, there is no direct cause.

That is very different than supporting or condoning activities that have a discriminatory effect. From the mild--vacationing in South Africa during apartheid--to the more direct, contributing to non-profit organizations whose mission is to restrict voting, those activities support, economically, discrimination. It does not take hatred of the minorities for that to constitute discrimination.

Very different things. But I think you are well within your rights to dislike bigots--whatever color they come in.

Mac, you really need to pay attention. Go back and re-read all my posts. I have NEVER defended the Governor of NC, other than saying that he is less culpable than the long string of Democrat Governors when it comes to addressing coal ash concerns. When you can't make a point with an honest assessment, you just make up points to suit your rants. In addition, not one bit of evidence has been presented to date that proves or supports any unethical behavior by the governor. Not that it won't happen, but just because you say it is so, doesn't make it so. And by the way, his only current tie to Duke Energy is their retirement program. Conflict of interest? We shall see.

Is the scab bleeding yet?
