I agree with Steven. Even when there are no waves there is no inland brown water sailing experience that rivals the spiritual bliss of sailing on clear, deep blue waters outside of the reefs of Maui. I personally could not live there due to my own needs for metropolitan culture, but there is no place that I would rather travel to sail than Maui. The Gorge is a very special outdoor paradise though, but I prefer to approach it as a multi-sport travel experience. |

Bard said it all.
There are a small number of sailors who come here and stay in Kihei.
It is quite hot there at times and the sailing is inferior.
The rest of us stay on the North Shore or up country at higher altitude on the volcano.
In Makawao it is always Spring. in Kula always Automn....on Crater Road you can see your breathe at night in the chilly air even in July. |

I no longer live in Maui but everything StevenBard said is true..
As far as the heat/humidity. Go there for more than 5 days and you adjust.. No place I have ever been (including the Gorge and certainly New Mexico) even comes close.. I don't miss some parts of Maui but the recreation and weather were great.. |

So the smart move is to buy a residence there, and then, just spend
3 or 6 months there. I'm looking, and housing is pretty depressed.
Kihei looks like the best call. Naturally, I only have a couple of weeks
a year experience so far, but that's how my Gorge experience started,
and now I'm there most of the summer. If it weren't for the extremely
high maintenance fees, I'd be a semi-resident already. ;*)

Not everyone is alike. I've had two stays > 30 days, and it didn't get any better in that regard. Maybe I used up my lifetime allotment of steam baths after 25 years in and near the Florida panhandle. |

The jobs are near Kihei, so many folks live there because they must.
About half of my friends work there but moved upcountry.
They drive over an hour each way just to avoid living in Kihei. The usual progression for many is to start there because they went there on vacation, and then move to escape the heat and the shopping -center- in -California kind of environment.
And the no waves offshore wind sailing. |

My wife and I are moving over in the fall, to Haiku. 7-8 months there, and then 4-5 months in the gorge. The biggest problem is hauling the pooch along with us - turns out that if the dog + kennel weighs more than 70 lbs the dog has to be shipped as cargo. Hawaiian charges $750 one way (from Seattle) and Alaskan charges more than $800. It would be cheaper to buy a seat on the plane for the dog. |
