It looks like even in a SW wind you would get a wrap wave around the point and then have down the line side-off wave sailing. Does anyone know the story of the parking lot there? Public parking? Town parking?
I bet even a good ground swell would sneek in that far. Wink

Yo Mr Angulo, look at this pic and tell me you are not thinking the same thing.

Yup PK pointed that out to me and now that it is on my radar it got me thinking.
Funny I just installed a weather station about a month ago on Sconticut Neck. The point just to the West of West Island. I think it quite a bit less of a drive from my house than Horesneck and could have what I am looking for! Mr. Green

Just checked out the ......
West Island Overview
West Island is one of the best fall windsurfing sites in New England. Best to go past labor day. You will find a beautiful, empty beach. Launch to the east, the only place without rocks. Park by the lookout tower. You'll have 100 yards to walk your equipment to the beach. It is best on a Southwest, but also good on easterlies. Just watch out for a couple rocks off the point if the wind is directly onshore.
What makes West Island good is that it is the most exposed launch into Buzzards bay. On a southwest, the east launch is flat on the inside and big on the outside. Expect swells at least head high on 4.0 days.
There is a sand bar off the point that changes from year to year. On good years it creates excellent ramps, though the wave isn't quite turned enough for riding.
*** Warning ***
Be very careful sailing this site on a northwesterly, westerly or northeasterly with an outgoing tide. The current just off the island can be strong and if you miss the tip of the island, you will be in trouble. Advanced sailors with a buddy only in these conditions.

Says the wave does not wrap quite enough for riding but I think I would like to make that decision on my own.

I've sailed here a few times in SW. Being out so far into the Bay gets you into the wind swell easier than the 3 mile reach off Ned's to Nye's Ledge. If you get yourself to my red arrow you have some really nice wind swell coming over a shallow area, but at the peril of some not so nice rocks...similar to the area near Kalmus off Great Island, but with 10x the rocks! I've been meaning to go scope out the rocks at a really low tide some day.

I don't think any ground swell makes it here unless a hurricane is imminent Shocked

I am not giving up. Many people would have said dingleberries was not worth it but I know how it can be in the right conditions.
Waist high and side off would be worth the drive.

Nice spot....there is a small swimmers area where you have the blue lines..
Bit of a walk with gear from parking lot to blue lines. You have to watch out as there are rocks which are visable at low tide. Easiest to launch south of parking lot and take a tack over

I went there once. It would have been a shorter walk to go south of the parking lot but at low tide I was afraid of the rocky bottom. The longer walk east to the sandy beach gave a better launch. The actual conditions matched the wind reading from IW. Parking lot very full on a summer weekend, but started to empty around 330 or so.
Then I had to get rescued, but that's another story.
