So, if it wasn't bad enough that we went from a mild and windy spring to wind & rain free inferno for the entire summer starting precisely on June 1st, there is now the lurking danger of lethal cyano bacteria!
This stuff gets going when the water gets above 90°F has lots of sunlight, and is stagnant. If it gets really bad, it can kill a dog in a couple minutes and can be potentially deadly to humans. There are a number of small lakes (or ponds) that have warnings on em, but none of the windsurfing lakes.....yet.
The levels are so low from the drought that many shorelines have receded by as much as 100 feet, leaving boats sitting on dried mud, still tied to docks. One of the long board guys in KC says that he tagged the top of a submerged tree last week in a placed he'd sailed many times and didn't even know there were trees under there!
Mostly this stuff hasn't affected us, becasue there hasn't been ANY wind, but I thought I'd let the coastal sailors know our pain, so that you may pity us as you fly over our crispy brown landscape at 40,000 ft. _________________ Kansas City |

And the extended, as in 20-year, forecast calls for more of same ... seriously. We've had wind and mostly cool to chilly weather in the PacNW, but the wind quality has been significantly substandard. (What ... no sympathy?)

Yep. But actually, more like 100 years. From the New York Times last Sunday:
The New York Times wrote: | [E]ach of the next 80 years in the American West is expected to see less rainfall than the average of the five years of the drought that hit the region from 2000 to 2004. ... [P]rojections suggest that what we consider today to be an episode of severe drought might even be classified as a period of abnormal wetness by the end of the century. |

Rigitrite- We in the North East feel your pain- at least as far as lack of wind... it must be windy somewhere... Hatteras, Iceland, the Hebrides?
On a side note- I lived in KC for 3 years long ago- I miss Gates and Bryants- send some out please... And who ever has wind, send lots. Thanks! |

Finally got some wind yesterday! First time there's been enough wind to sail in two months; it's been so long, that I was thrilled to be able to ride a 5.8 on 120 l. freestyle board. Also anticipating about an inch of rain this weekend: first real rain since May for us.
There was a 1000 acre grassfire east of KC that nearly burned down a couple houses. Everything is so dry that this fire was started by a farm tractor driving over a rock! _________________ Kansas City |
