The mast breakages that I've had have either been attributed to design defect (i.e., snapped during one of the first uses), going down in the surf, or because of cam/boom abrasion. I don't recall ever having one break purely because of age.
I check my masts periodically in the boom clamp area. This section of the mast (as well as cam contact points) are very prone to abrasion. I typically paint on a layer of epoxy over any wear and have even added a layer of glass tape on some of my masts to repair/prevent abrasion of the carbon. If your mast is being worn, it will eventually break.
As far as wintertime sailing goes, I always assume that there is a possibilty that some piece of gear can break, regardless of age. Use your head - dress appropriately, sail in onshore wind, sail with others, etc. if you're going out in those conditions.
