Bard, you are right about the burbs. Brentwood, BH, Palisades, all beautiful, incredible places ...thats why $5,000,000 gets you a cute bungalo. Dude, are you kidding? Provo? Colorado Springs? Orange County? BORING! BORING!
SF has gotten rid of the Embarcadero Freeway, now they are building a new Doyle Drive, so the waterfront NEVER looked better than right now, and will sparkle when Larry brings the Cup to town next Summer.
BTW-The North Tower delivered a head high standing wave for three hours yesterday, it was great.
I was born in '66,so I cant speak for the 60's.
Bard...your little critique of cities, run by liberals aint sticking. I love LA, SF, Boston ,Miami, NY, Portland, Seattle ,and most "liberal" cities. When you mention Provo, or Colorado Springs, or Oklahoma City...I fall asleep.

I think its pretty funny that a thread started by a good buddy in Boston, another one of my favorite places, about Eric Holder..has morphed into "L.A. Sucks".

I love the idea that Americas nice towns are built by conservatives and our bad towns are because libs run them.
The most conservative state is Alabama. I wish I had a photo to post of Selma Ala. to compare to some liberal town like Santa Barbara or Lawrence Kansas.

KC, I also witnessed gun violence when I was very young, and it is a very serious subject. The Allen West comment was meant to be a metaphor by him and me. However, we have lost so much of the personal responsibility aspect of American life that it is true, there are too many idiots with weapons. However, much of those issues could be resolved with gun safety class for anyone below the age of 40 without a college degree. (or IQ test Laughing )

Thank you windoggie for checking my IQ. I was thinking about a nice south swell hitting today.

Metaphor? BS. The roaring applause wan't for a brilliant metaphor, it was for guns - talking about them gives certain people a hard-on every time.

Bard--I live in Berkeley, which is way too precious for me frequently. I am happy that your father was a striver, who made it here legally and worked hard. I can teach strivers. I am sad that you didn't take advantage of our education system to actually learn anything, and that you are so full of self-loathing that you have hooked your wagon to the party that is so anti-immigrant that they would like to string your father up. Where do I start with this:

Quote:
So they don't send kids to the ivy league from the inner city? Shows just how racist you are mac. My point was to show that if 1 kid can do it, they all can. I get that there are many shitty schools, but no matter how shitty, every school has produced a few great minds. Why? Probably parents.

My father in law crossed the border with his family, legally to pick fruit. He only had a high school education and became a wealthy man over the years. HE NEVER GOT A GOVT HANDOUT, EVER. His kids went to school in East LA. Most of them are wealthy. Life couldn't have been harder, or with more obstacles and road blocks for them.

The German Workers' Party name was changed by Hitler to include the term National Socialist. Then he blossomed as a facist. Hitler only took guns from the people who were opposed to him politically. Of course he allowed members of his own "Democratic" party to own hand guns.

My point in all discussions over the years is that if it can happen in Italy or Germany or Russia, it can happen here.

I am simply astounded that anyone who claims to have gone to school misunderstands the title of the German Workers Party to actually reflect socialism. Let me educate you just a bit--the Nazis, their allies in Italy, and Franco's party in Spain were as right wing as has ever ruled. To be confused by the title is to be uninformed--or perhaps just ignorant.

Now Bard--I spend 4 days a week in a grade school, teaching kids, mostly of color, to read and math. I do it for free, as a volunteer, because I think it is the most important thing that gives these kids a chance. You want to think I am a racist, go ahead--I just consider the source. I doubt that you actually understand what the barriers to education are. Immigrants are probably the easiest to teach--they were strivers to get here, and their children come to school valuing education. Them I am not worried about. Those from entrenched, multi-generation poverty? Those kids I am worried about. But you are dead wrong that an entitlement mentality is the problem. The problem is that some kids come to school convinced, by their parents and their circumstances, that the system is gamed against them and they can't possibly win. So they don't try. They are afraid to fail. I try to show them that setbacks and struggle are not failure--the only failure is to quit.

All my great kids have great mothers. But the difference between me and you is that I want all of my kids to have a chance--even if they don't have a great mother. Some kids going on to success seems to justify the system to you (if one kid can make it they all can?). My goal is for all kids to have a chance, not just some. And all the hate that you spew, and the clear evidence that you have not managed to educate yourself, just make me sad.

Your right is my left Mac. They all start out soft and then get crazy as they get more power.

You and I both help kids Mac. Funny, I see the world 180 degrees from you. I watched alot of guys who inherited their money literally go to pot. Worthless over time, yet I've seen so many without a pot to piss in attain such great status.

Back to Holder, I still don't get why you guys stand up for him. From your standpoint isn't in morally wrong for the 17 dems to have voted to censur him, just so they could get re-elected? Rhetorical question.

Back to Holder. You can't seem to understand how the issue is really about Issa, who is a scumbag and demagogue, and casts his attacks on Holder (as do much of the right) in terms that evoke racism. Remember, the Republican presidents in the past have had scumbag attorney general's like Mitchell (he went to jail), Ed Meese (a light weight Alameda County prosecutor, if memory serves), and the most recent scumbag who gave a legal opinin justifying torture.

Our boy Issa is perhaps the second richest man in Congress, collecting big money from all, particularly the oil industry. Should we call him the bag man for the Koch's? What is the real issue here, since Holder has given the Congressional Committee most of the documents they have asked for, and Issa well understands that there is no underlying corruption in Fast and Furious--which began under Attorney General Michael Mukasey under President George W. Bush, and was in fact ended by Holder. The real issue is the Republican strategy of trying to suppress voter registration and turnout to bolster the chances of Republicans in the fall elections. Nearly all of the States with a Republican majority have passed some type of law restricting voting by the poor--not because there is any evidence of voter fraud, but because poor voters tend to swing elections to Democrats. Now whether the underlying motive is racial or simply trying to hold onto power, the Republicans are furious at Holder for having challenged some of these laws which in fact have racially discriminatory effects.

I held Issa in contempt for a long time because of his political views. But just consider the possibility that this is really about voter suppression, and trying to bully the Department of Justice. And that, indeed, is why the Black Caucus walked out. Things you don't read on your right wing blog spots. Like Hitler was a right wing nut, not a socialist.

That's incomprehensible, considering what even the far left media cannot deny about him.
