US single bolt allows an extra inch of fw/bw mast track adjustment, fwiw.

Euro can go to zero extension while the lowest extension with a us cup is 8 or 10 CM, so with a certain setup the us cup will not work.

If you use the Euro Pin, make sure you check it before each use to make sure it isn't loose (Coming unscrewed). After about four jibes I had one unscrew and my rig separated from the board. I was windsurfing in the Lagoon of a small island and this happened at the mouth of the Lagoon. As the currents were dragging me out to sea I almost ditched my rig and paddled for it, I thought the pin had snapped off. I decided to check one more time and I saw the pin inside the extension, it had just come unscrewed.

I recently discovered that euro pins are attached via loctite red. Probably a good idea if you are concerned about them coming unscrewed.

As far as sand, if your base and extension are dry when you couple them, I doubt sand will be an issue. I have been euro for years and agree with everything the other euro guys said earlier.

I'm having a hard time seeing that. We have a whole set of sails with US bases that are set at a max of 1 cm from the cleat at the CSUS Aquatic Center.

Use Euro 98% I have had sand in one that required some extra cleaning otherwise no issue at all. They are easier to detatch for a older fellow. Of note not all euro plns are compatable with other euro systems.

I would not consider changing over... but would replace to when needed

I didn't see anyone mention that the euro pin system allows the lowest setting on the extension to be closer to 0. I recently got a sail that needed to be rigged on a 430cm mast with 2cm of extension. All of my US bases have a min setting of 8cm or more. I found that a Euro system allowed me to set the extension at 2cm and it sounds crazy but it made a big difference when setting my boom height etc.... I use both Euro and US and find that they both have their + and -'s. Euro is faster and easier to attach until sand is involved and the US system does rattle around more.

OK I believe it's in the difference between SDM and RDM, the skinny extension has to transition to a fatter diameter at the US cup and this keeps one from removing the collar and having the mast sit down on the top of the cup, i.e. there is a funnel shaped bit at the bottom of the extension where the mast cannot slide.
On my Chinook carbon us cup skinny extension the minimum is 10 cm but on a SDM US cup you can remove the collar and the mast can sit right on top of the cup.
