Do you windsurf better using the newest gear?
I'd reckon RobbyNaish in 1988, using '88 gear, sailed THEN better than you do now, with all your fancy '12 gear.
Talent is still 85% of the equation, which leaves the gear at 15%.

Anyone wonder if the average age of the windsurfing participants being somewhere north of 45 is adversely impacting newcomers?

When I'm at my local spot, I'm one of the "young guns" at 47... maybe the question isn't gear or costs, but a cultural one.

I suspect a lot of younger people who might be interested in the sport, are turned off by what is perceived to be a "geezer fest".

It's not a false perception though, if you don't like wrinkly brown skin,
you're not gonna like a windsurfing beach (in The States), and might
I add, that Kite boarding (here in Utah) is rapidly turning into a similar
Geezer sport.

it is what it is,

Who started all this freestyle stuff? I doubt it was one if us geezers?? Was it some skate boarders that made the crossover from concrete to water?
One thing I've noticed is that most of us geezers still talk like we're 25 Cool

The fundamental problem of WS is that it is more expensive than kiting no matter how you look at it. It is costlier to buy, to store, to travel with - you name it. Given the onslaught of kiting, I wonder what is happening with the WS industry? Is WS growing? From what I see around Washington DC, everyone's kiting - tons of new younger people and a lot of older former windsurfers who switched. An average windsurfer here is either a recipient of social security or about to become one.

I'm glad windsurfing got dropped by the OlympicCommittee, since their form has little to do with reality.
If you need Olympics to do any sport, you should quit life right now. Olympics is just that.... nothing but a show.
Mountain and rock climbing are some of the toughest endeavors anyone can do, and it's not in the Olympics. Nether are TriAthalons, 2 day races, or Adventure/Eco sports.
Is golf more sport than curling?

LeeD a) you have no idea what I sail, so don't make assumptions b) I would never compare myself with a pro windsurfer, let alone Robby Naish, so don't put words in my mouth, although if you did ask Robby I bet he'd tell you that he wished he had modern gear back then.

And to Zirtaeb
You're right that Olympic windsurfing has very little to do with most windsurfers but, in other countries, there is government funding for the sport. Kids who do the olympic programs trickle down and decide to follow different avenues in windsurfing. So, in that way, it's disappointing that it was replaced. What does this mean to us?
Well most windsurf businesses only survive because windsurfing is still popular in Europe (and people buy new gear), Germany and France being the largest markets. These countries have Olympic windsurfing programs for youth who are then hooked on the sport and buy their own gear. So the fact the the ISAF, not the Olympic Committee, chose to replace windsurfing with kiting could be harmful to the sport.
So maybe what you meant to say was that your glad windsurfing one-design got dropped, but you hope it will be replaced with another form of windsurfing.

Angulo was doing some pretty crazy stuff... but it was on the face of waves... not flat water. A quick google search reveals Josh Stone as the inventor of the Spock and the Vulcan. I suspect Naish, Angulo, Cabrinha and crew were doing similar moves back in the 80's, they just didn't have names.

I remember seeing a video of Robby looping off a piece of chop in front of a Hookipa monster wave.
