Ow Kontrayre, Mansewer. Every turn in that video must have violated somebody's ROW, in that nobody's maintaining their course. Your video depicts the carnage that results when some people have fun rather than marching in step with the rules. I gotta admit, though, that it would have been livelier if at least part of it had been in real time rather than slow motion. I kept expecting a switch to normal speed at some point.

This video illustrates the OP's concern, showing multiple carves or gybes without a quick glance downwind first. The video editing could have cropped out some of the "checks" though...

Right, which was actually my intent, but the constructive criticism you've
provided is also useful to my editing. There is some full speed in there,
but more would be good. I'll take that into consideration.

The riders (my sailing mates) are what they are, I can't convince
them to be more or less exciting, or turn off one foot or the other
(well maybe after a few beers). I typically shoot my friends, because
they have fun watching it, and I like it when my friends have fun.

No one in any of that video collided with anyone else, but they did change
directions a fare amount with other sailors (sometimes me) in close
proximity to them.

Thanks,

-Craig

That's OK. We won't see legislation or an executive order mandating our footwork unless the next election gores terribly awry. Wink

I've always been lucky to windsurf in areas that aren't crowded but recently started to windsurf in semi crowded areas. Could someone explain to me the right of ways? I read somewhere that downwind guys have the right of way? Little confused

For now I just try to get out of the way of anyone who gets near me Very Happy

Good luck with that on a windy midsummer day at the Hatchery. Wink
If you're on the good swell, there are ALWAYS 10+ sailors within striking distance ... literally. Every move you make interferes with all 10 of them, and every move each of those 10 makes changes your plans.

It reminds me of my border collie, a fanatical jackrabbit chaser, the day we found ourselves in the path of an organized multi-state rabbit drive. Her reaction to thumping herds of the damn things coming straight at her was priceless to watch.

I hope this helps. The downwind sailor does have right of way. Basically “right of way” rules have to do with maneuverability. The boat that is considered to be the least maneuverable is given right of way. But like any other sports a little civility goes a long way. Just because you have right of way doesn’t mean you have to impose it. Also, learn to read a sailors body language, both kiter & windsurfer. You will be able to tell which ones are beginner to intermediates and therefore less maneuverable than you. I yield all right of way rules to less experienced sailors.

But it's the upwind sailor which has the least maneuverability, especially if he's already pinching. Either sailor can stall and drop, but only the downwind sailor has the option ... and half of the lake or river or ocean at his beck and call ... to bear off.

And the narcissist is heard from again. Consisently wrong, and consistently arguing that he has the right to do whatever he wants. Way to go Iso, show your skunk stripes!
