My apologies for the boredom, the intent was to show how little
straight line sailing there is in the Gorge. We the unwashed and
unworthy could take solace though, if you could just condescend
to provide a snippet of video, perhaps of yourself, to not
only enlighten, but also enliven us.

GTrousers (what a moniker) Do your trousers really gurgle? I watched that Gorge video and it put me to sleep. However, the Gorge is an amazing place.
You might want to visit the California coast for some real wave sailing.... |

It can be Heaven or a War Zone depending on how you operate in
the Gorge, but the "locals" seem to be satisfied and pretty peaceful.
Once in a while you get a tourist running a rail straight though some
heavenly swell, yelling Starboard at you. It's a little like standing at
the top of a virgin powder field as you watch somebody traverse
across and then back. Kind of a waste, but hey, they have the same
right to waste it as you have to rip it. I usually give anybody running
a straight line through swell a wide birth, whether I'm Starboard or
not, because even if I am Starboard, I'll probably be Larboard 1/2 a second later.
Some typical evidence of my mates and how it is

Oh, and I definitely give way to barges too. ;*)
Just be sure you stay off of my swell London Boy! ;*)

There was I, imagining the Gorge to be seventh heaven with all who sail it highly satisfied with life, and full of sweetness and light, when all along it's a war zone.
It must be hell with angry, aggressive, ego maniacs claiming this is MY water, I'M gybing here, get out of MY way you prick, barging their way about. I think I'll stick to the sea. (And 'proper' surfing! )
P.S. Surfing rules are fine until somebody goes down in the impact zone. Anyone daft enough to claim right of way and deliberately take them out, would soon face very unpleasant consequences. |

Now, you're talking about a whole different issue than jibing on top of someone and the ROW rules. This is about courtesy, rather than either wave or ROW rules. It is pretty easy to tell who is playing on swell and who is just blasting back and forth and one can easily adjust his reach to accommodate either.
Personally, I let the sailor on the swell take his ride, regardless of my tack direction. It is pretty easy to signal to another sailor you are giving up the ROW. Just turn a little. And, most of all, when I'm on the swell, return the favor. (or favour GT)

The funny thing is even the swell riders can't agree on how to ride. A typical day at the hatch you will see....
1. People whould shouldn't be at the hatch, but since that is all people talk about figure they need to sail there even though it's above their level.
2. The people that think swell riding is just carving a jibe on it.
3. The people that think you should point straight up river, luff your sail and just ride it to Canada.
4. The really COOL people who treat the swell as a wave and cut top and bottom turns out of it.
You can guess which group I like best

Careful, John; you just became guilty by association (that's 90% of my sailing). Fortunately, everybody on the coast knows we can't do that in the Gorge.

Until you learn to turn off your front foot, you are not really riding the swell. You are just getting pulled around by your sail. That's why your video is boring.

Alls I wanna know about the video is why the gal at 2:20 is carrying a gas station restroom key in her back pocket.

I think I have it then, turn off the front foot, not boring, anything else
boring. And here I thought we were having fun and not being bored,
but what we really need is you guys to show us how not to be bored.
I'm presuming the laydown in the picture is turning off the front foot,
kinda weird, the weight distribution on that picture looks pretty even,
so I guess it's half boring. I recommend you all let me know when you're
in the hood, so I can get some exciting video of you. Until then though
you're gonna want to avoid any video you see with my tag on it. I hate to
think I caused damage to your laptop when you did a somnambulistic
face plant, after watching it.

Yeh, Melinda rips with or without that key (or the flops it looks like).
