More recently in the Washington Post, there was a commentary by Mann and Ornstein that says a bit more about Congressional gridlock and the Republican's principle role in it. When stuff like this is coming from the American Enterprise Institute and the Brookings Institution, it's hardly something that can be written off as simply liberal thought and bias.

As I understand it, the American Enterprise Institute is quite conservative, and the Brookings Institute hasn't quite figured out which side of the fence they occupy -- sometimes slightly liberal, sometimes slightly conservative.

On balance, then, this should be a conservative-leaning team. So these guys should be taken seriously when that say that both sides are causing problems, but the Republicans are beyond the pale.

"...one of the two major parties, the Republican party, has become an insurgent outlier, ideologically extreme, contemptuous of the inherited social and economic policy regime, scornful of compromise, unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence, and science, and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition."

"...but for Republicans currently inside Congress, you have a new set of litmus tests and a new outlook that leads them in directions where you can't say that there is such a thing as climate change, you take positions on things like immigration that are simply off the rails, and if you compromise you are basically defiling what the party stands for."

"When you have Mitch McConnell saying, after the first two years of the Obama administration, in effect, 'Well of course we wouldn't cooperate with him, because if our fingerprints were on any of those policies and they were popular, he'd get credit for them.' There's not a hint in that of, 'Well, the first thing we gotta do is solve the problems facing the country.'"

And Mitch is smarter than Boehner. Are either of them likeable?

McConnell is a hatchet man with a notable mean streak. You never see him smile. Boehner, on the other hand, isn't nearly as unlikable, but he still isn't beyond the gutter in my view. He'll readily stretch the truth and/or fabricate nonsense to serve his goals.

Not really. McConnell is more sneaky, slippery, slithery, like a snake. Boehner just pounds the podium when he's pissed -- or cries.

Didn't Obama play golf with Boeher? I wonder if Boehner made up his score...
