Hi Everyone,
Happy 2012! It looks like the winds are coming early (fingers crossed) and we are ready to spread the wind/water stoke. We are hoping you will help us.
Once again, Jane and I are reaching out to the community to join us in a very special event. We are hosting a free learn to windsurf day (or SUP if the wind does not cooperate) for a group of children from Project AVARY on April 28th from 10-1pm at our facility on Crown Beach in Alameda. Project AVARY provides children & youth with incarcerated parents in developing the skills, confidence, and positive life views that promote healthy personal development and responsibility to community.
These children are often living with either one parent, a grandparent, a relative or being shuffled around between different communities. Their life can be very unstable, and Project AVARY provides an incredibly, stable and positive foundation in their lives.
Our goal is to get as many windsurfers, SUPers, kiters from the community as possible to help make this intro to windsurfing an amazing, inspiring, confidence-building experience! The more volunteers, the better. YOU merely cheering on a child can make the difference!
We will lead the instruction, but would love help in on-water instruction, getting the kids in wetsuits, helping with the gear, taking pictures, cheering, moral support.....
If you need more encouragement to get involved. See the video that the children made from last year's event. The wind did not cooperate, so we had them out SUPing. This was a video the children made that day with footage from this event: http://www.projectavary.org/
Please email or call us if you are interested in helping out. The more support, the better!
All the best!
-Rebecca

Hi,
I would just like to make sure people know they don't really have to know how to teach in order to participate in this special day. I volunteered a couple of times and I know this might sound cliche, but I think I got more out of it than the kids. They are an amazing group and they really appreciate our support. Thanks, Rebecca! |
