I rented for years and found that places with garage cost a lot more. You will find a place outside or under to put BIG pile of gear you wind up buying at first off the rail at Kanaha or at garage sale.

I have a minivan right now and was thinking about shipping it over. I like it cause all my gear fits right in it and its fairly new but I am still undecided as its gonna be a couple grand at least from east coast. Is windsurfing theft a problem at Kanaha if I get a pickup?

Not at Kanaha. Other places yes a little and wind side gusts can blow it out on the Hana. Surfboards are often stolen from pick ups but not windsurfers.
Sun and rain...A van is a lot better on Maui for everything you do.
Our gear lives in our van at all times. We take out once a month at most.
Locked in out of the weather. Costs $1100 on the boat from Long Beach and $950 or so from the east coast to Long Beach.
No gear inside or anything else.Easy pickup in Maui.
