Which should I do now ... get more sleep or cram down more fuel and fluids?
Crap; is this another skunk?
Holy cow, what gorgeous/$#!++y/hot/cold weather!
It's blowing at [any other spot]; should I drive or wait?
Is there a clearing zone to the west?
Should I go ahead and rig something?
But what ... the biggest sail I'm willing to use or the one I HOPE to use today?
Man, look at that ASS!
Bill's been working out.
Now does it get dark at 5:00, or 7:00, today, now that we switched times?
Are we gonna get the evening push?
Man, I love these crunchy leaves around my bare feet and ankles, but winter's right around the corner.
My GOD but I shouldda washed this wetsuit last week.
Can't they point those wind turbines this way and feed a few megawatts INTO them?
Reckon the gradient has changed since I looked four minutes ago?
WAS THAT A WHITECAP, or just a glint?
Dude, you're rigging three meters too small.
Are the coal trains really a threat?
JEEZ but it's nice to get away from that keyboard!
Damn ... sure miss that keyboard. |

Rum drinks, windsurfing?
Geez, having met the Mrs. Hodad, I thought Andy was thinking "sunny and steady".
But then, with fatherhood not far away, a new shop about to open, maybe he is discussing rum drinks. |

Haha, you guys are great! I like the wind speed/drink calculator. Maybe James Douglas can make a mobile friendly spreadsheet for everyone?
You're right, Rick- Mrs. Hodad is amazingly warm, sunny, and steady! Which is probably why I seek out my dark and stormy on the water! I think, in reality, everyone needs a bit of both in their lives...
Today's sesh was fantastic, by the way- raining sideways, up and down, shifty 4.0 conditions... Kinda challenging... but eventually, a hole in the clouds appeared and a giant, end to end rainbow formed. It was only there for 5 minutes, so I'm totally stoked that I happened to catch it while ripping around out on the water! Satiated... Now, about that rum drink... _________________ formerly known as hodad.andy

last weekend i had the beach to myself. surf was head high on friday and shoulder on saturday. was scratching my head as to why:
lots of surf pages on the web under stating the sea/surf state very badly. either the cultural thing going on, no one wants to seem the kook by getting the size remotely smaller than advertising. or, no one is out during observation times, therefore no scale.
virtually no one has any flexible schedules? the middle class has been brainwashed/forced into worries of money and such?
was far from perfect for my gales and huge waves i want as stated above, but it was bright, breezy, only a trifle cool (shorty suit was fine) and fun. the place all to myself was rather sad. would have even appreciated seeing more surfers partake. windsurfers, it was long board paradise.
some folks that wave sail here haven't even bothered for the past 6 weeks. this "gotta plane" mentality has really been rotten. wish there was a way more emphasis on long boards was made. i get 5 times more sailing in the surf due to my long board. _________________ www.aerotechsails.com

That probably enters the picture lately, but I'm firmly convinced that much of it is habit or even subservience, and that's a shame. Example: hundreds of bosses, from lowest management to the very top, were ordered on very short notice to completely rewrite thousands of subordinates' detailed 3-page job descriptions. Every one of my peers worked straight through the entire weekend with minimal sleep. I phoned the small office to whom these documents were due on Monday and asked, "Surely you can't review thousands of these things overnight. When do you REALLY need them?" He laughed and said "We won't get through the pile for weeks. Take all the time you want." I windsurfed all weekend and wrote my branch's job descriptions the following week ... when it wasn't windy. There's a whole magazine article out there on the topic written expressly with windsurfing in mind, called "Windsday Sailing".
I can think of a few careers not readily amenable to some degree of flexibility, but not many. Let's see, there's ... um ... uhhhh ... well, there must be one ... |
