You need to send someone with a Switchblade down to Cabrillo and whip the local race sail users, otherwise I have to call BS on that. |
Loft makes the Racing Blades for competing and they have helped quite a few sailors to podium positions at the PWA, speed events and have a number of national titles around the world.
I'm not claiming the Switchblade is as fast as those sails but I am still getting reports from sailors in different states that tell me they are faster than other guys on full-on race sails. The Switchblade was even used at the US Nationals in Berkeley earlier this year.
Just illustrating that despite the fact that it's a recreational cambered sail, it still has tremendous speed potential. Not claiming it's faster than any slalom sail out there. That's a claim I'll make about the Racing Blade.
I'll be in California early next year some time and will stop by Cabrillo.

I think Coach came close to saying this, but let me put out there the argument that, size for size, you'll get more low-end grunt from a camless freeride.
I bought your exact sail (9.5 MS TR2) for early planing, but find that its low-end performance isn't any better than my 8.5 Matrix. I made the mistake of assuming that the rigid foil shape of a cambered sail must translate into more low-end power, but that isn't the case. To be sure, the 9.5 does have good top-end performance, but by that point I should be on the 8.5 anyway.
I'm now thinking of replacing my 9.5 with either a 10.0 Retro, guaranteed to have good low-end grunt, or maybe the new Gaastra Savage, which is possibly the best of both worlds.

You haven't really discussed what kind of mast you're using, but I will assume that you have the proper Maui Sails mast. If that's the case, you're much better positioned to stick with Maui Sails. However, if you have your heart set on buying a different brand sail, I would recommend that you buy the optimum recommended mast to go with it. It makes things more expensive, but if you want peak performance and handling it's really a prerequisite.

I have MS2 not TR2.
"but find that its low-end performance isn't any better than my 8.5 Matrix."
I've used 8.5 Matrix and it is not even close to MS2 in low-end and stability.
