The season here is almost over. I started thinking about the replacement for my MauiSails MS2 9.5m sail that I use the most. I am looking for a 9 to 10m cambered sail, that would have an excellent low-end grunt, wide wind range and stability without being too heavy. I will use it with JP SLW or Fanatic Shark 145L boards.
Anybody tested Severne Overdrive sails?
Should I switch to full-on race sails like MauiSails TR or North Warp sails?

If you are looking for big range, cambered sails are way to go. Neil Pryde race sails are probably best game in town and very lightweight. Cambers rotate effortlessly.
I just happen to have 2010 NP EVO II 10.0m for sale on ebay. This sail is almost new. Great deal.

Overdrive is equivalent to your MS2. If you are worried about weight then a full blown race sail will likely weigh more then your freerace sail. Cambers add weight. Your 9.5 MS2 weight less then a 7.6 TR 8. And race sails won't have the low end grunt you are looking for. I'm not saying you can't plane early with a race sail, you just have to be willing to pump.

Switch to race sails if you want/need more range and better speed. Stay with freerace sails if you want ease of use & are inactive getting on to a plane.

l"ow-end grunt, wide wind range and stability without being too heavy"
Choose any two. The weight of a sail in lbs does not make it feel nearly as heavy as cutting the pocket for grunt.
Lots of pocket limits the range.
These principles will help you understand why all sails do not have lots of low end power AND lots of range AND a light feel.
Why would anyone make any other design if they could put it all together like that?

I understand those principles, and I think that a freeracer will most likely work best for me since I am not a speed demon.
The reason I posted the question is that Mauisails made a Titan, as a MS2 replacement, more speed oriented with a flatter shape, and I can feel it. Therefore, I was wondering if someone had a chance to compare freerace sails and tell me if there is a freeracer geared toward the low-end power.
All sailmakers are stating that they are somehow increasing the draft in the lower part of the sail and create more twist to handle the speed and gusts and use newer lighter materials.
As for the number of battens, North Warp has only 7 battens wich supposed to make it lighter. Hence, the question about Warp.

May I add that sail can be tuned for low end grunt, but it will have heavier feel. Tuned for top end it will feel very light. So, you can have it in one sail to some extent, it is matter of tuning. One thing for sure, NP race sails, when trimmed correctly, feel very light and have huge range. Don't know about Severne for sure, but one would expect similar performance to NP for 2011 and 2012 sails.
Freerace vs. full race sail? I would allways go for full race sail if you can afford it. It will simply be faster with more range. It will also feel lighter in hands throughout range when powered up, just because of more stable profile.
They are not fun to waterstart, but the idea is not to be in water in first place.

You are probably right in that the full-on Race sails are not necessarily best nor the fastest for the free racer. Unless you are in a race trying to hold on to ridiculously oversized gear only to stay on a full-on plane at all times, you are probably going to be just as fast (and faster around the transitions) with a 3-cam freerace.

I gave up 1st place in the local Fall Slalom Race to a sailor on a cam-less KA Koyote who had consistently better starts (in part due to easier sail positioning and pumping) than I did on the 3-cam KA Koncept, although I had the edge on the reaches. This was with an 8.5m in about 20 knots - really white knuckle sailing that have your thighs burning after a 1/2 mile reach. With an 8 batten 4 or 5 cam race sail, I would have perhaps had a tiny advantage in the gusts, but never enough to make up for one slow jibe.

If you already own MauiSails masts, I would try the Titan. The KA Koncept goes on a standard curve mast and has three battens throughout the range whereas the Titan has two in the smaller sizes.

Consider the Loft Switchblade. Here is a recent test from Windsport.
http://www.a-o-sports.com/Windsurfing/Loft/Switchblade.htm.

Check out some tests of older model Switchblades here:
http://www.loftsails.com/2010/tests.php

The Switchblade has more low-end than the Racing Blade and is lighter as well. Still getting reports from people winning drag races against sailors with dedicated race sails with these.

Biggest size is 9.3.

You need to send someone with a Switchblade down to Cabrillo and whip the local race sail users, otherwise I have to call BS on that.
