Who remembers the old reliable solid Seaside, New Jersey Thermal? It was always blowing. Saturday's forecast is this:West to Southwest winds in the low teens. 10, 15, 20 years ago the southwest wind blended with the southeast sea breeze.
You could set your watch for 2:30 by the caps walking down the bay.
Once a given, is now hit or miss with a fade at 5pm. Please now speak to us again this Saturday with a steady thermal, O' Mr. South Wind.

My Granny lived in Monmouth Beach ....Two blocks inland and downwind from what became Seven Presidents park. Islanders Surf shop....Airborne.... all that
You could sit in the back yard, and then BOOM, you would smell the ocean and it was time to go....guess it was about 2:30....

Locals attribute the Gorge's dramatic decline (from 3-4 days most summer weeks in the 1990s to 4-5 days per season the past decade) of thermal dawn patrol winds to Portland's blooming urban sprawl. It keeps Portland much warmer at night, lowering the dawn temp gradient. Those often provided the Hood River corridor's finest sailing, but they are apparently gone forever as a regular feature. Maybe something like that has interfered with your thermal patterns.

I lived & sailed in the Gorge (Summers) from 1985-1990, was some of the best sailing I have had in my life. I was lucky to stay in Rowena for a whole Summer, access at the door, rigged and ready.
Thermals were always the game.
I did not realize that the famed winds have disapated.
Been here on Cape Cod for last 21 years and remember the strong SW winds, Kalmus was put on the map with WindHotline. July of 1991 (?) had over 25 days over 25 knots...we use to call it the 5 O'clock express....when it really picked up for the afterwork crowd.
Where are those days?
Temps are right...but the wind is fleeting.
Global warming shutting down the Burmuda High & jet stream?
We certainly get more "back-door cold fronts" now, WX from NE direction, generating out of Greenland...as it melts...maybe shutting down Gulfstream effects that would bring SW winds.
Speculation.

the east coast fade must have to do with the position/strength of the bermuda high, because the cape doesn't get that old thermal any more either. if it was low teens by 11 or noon, it would go to 20 plus by 3 on any hot sunny dry summer day. for a few years it was happening as the "5 o'clock blow" but have not seen a good thermal pick-up in a couple seasons.

I remember being well powered on a 5.2 and an 86 liter on thermals in Narragansett Bay- hasn't really happened for about 4-5 years... geography/ urban build hasn't changed, but weather patterns have- not to our benefit unfortunately...

The thermal at Trixies on Barnegat Bay used to kick in on any day that was sunny with some south breeze blowing. About 2 PM you could see the big sail boats start to bend over to the south....the wind was on its way ! We used to rig the 5 and 4.5 sails ahead of time so we didn t have to rig as the wind picked up.
The biggest difference then was winters were cold and the ocean and bay stayed cold well into July. Now the water is in the 70,s as early as May. No hot land and cold water to drive the thermal........
