Thanks Jeff! The sailing really is great. Earlier in the spring I wanted to see if what my eyes told me was really correct, so I explored all around. Since then, here are my observations.

First, the launch on the Atlantic beach side is super-easy.

Second, there really is a point break within a quick reach away.

Third, the wide, concrete stairs we installed to accommodate the 8' tide make a big difference when launching into the harbor.

Fourth, the wind tends to measure a bit higher than the reading at Deer Island in most directions save SE.

Fifth, it's a great deal of fun to either SUP or windsurf around Deer Island from one of our launches to the other. Or head out to the Boston Harbor Islands. Maybe one day this fall I'll sail over to Nahant or out to the outer lighthouse.

For now, we are eyeball deep in land use issues, so we closed the operation for the season. That said, please call me if you want to go windsurfing. The gear is locked and loaded, ready to go. If I have the time, and you want to go, I'll be there and we can sail together.

If you go to http://eastofair.com/where.html and use the zoom out feature of the embedded map, you will see the point to the north northeast. I was wave sailing there a few weeks ago. I have yet to see it really fire, but I'm assured by the local surfers that it's one of the best around.

Thanks for the posts Dan and for taking on the huge effort of starting East of Air. I was out at East of Air last Sunday with Dan and Jeff when it was blowing NE (well, at least it was blowing a little before I got out on the water). I know Dan S. called to check about the parking, many thanks. I'm excited to try it on a good day, especially when the point break is working. I had heard about that spot from some of my surfing buddies, but I'd never been out there before. What direction do you think will work best for the point break? SE, S/SE, maybe NE? Looked like it would be tough to launch from the ocean side in SW because of what I expect is a fairly sizable wind shadow created by the treatment plant. Hopefully I'll run into you soon.

Hi Seth,

Launching from SW isn't a big deal because the wind flows directly over our property rather than trying to go over the hill on Deer Island. But it is just that hill and the one across the bay upon which the water tower sits that operates to accelerate the wind in a SW.

I've sailed that break in everything but NE. Just haven't had the chance. SSE is perfect side-off, but SW and NW work great, too.

Hey Dan et. al.,

In the near future, I was looking into doing some SUP rentals and teaching a few friends (beginners) with some East of Air beginner gear as I own none myself.

Saw a troubling message (dated March 19) on the Facebook page which gets linked from: www.eastofair.com
Quote:
Hello everyone!
It is a time to say "Thank you!" for your support of the East of Air place. During the winter we did our best trying to continue this venue, however, the town council put restrictions on, therefore it is not possible for us to be there anymore. Thanks to the some local people we stopped, and decided not to spend our lives fighting with them.

I'm assuming this is no longer operational, but hoping to be told I am incorrect.

That's really sad if this is true. It's unfortunate how water access in Mass. is many times "locked up" and off limits.

I was kinda hoping for something along these lines, like they do in the UK. Wouldn't that be nice!

By any chance, is any of the East of Air gear available?
Too bad to hear about this...

Another argument for smaller government. It's amazing people try to start a nice , clean , healthy recreational opportunity for a community and they get their balls busted.
