I am at work sorta bored, and started thinking about perhaps, maybe, getting a Kona One. The only problem is that there isn't much (if any) racing around my area. (NY). It just seems like one-design would be so much fun, having done extensive one-design and offshore sailboat racing in my life, but now that I'm into windsurfing, I do miss racing.

So, my question is whether there is any regular Kona One one-design racing going on around the US (esp. in summer months as I have off) and where that is happening.

thanks.

I'd get one and practice on it in NY, then you'll have a good excuse to take a couple vacations to Florida every year for the big regattas there, where you can charter equipment cheaply.

Like this recent one...

I don't know if there are Kona ONE races in the Northeast yet but probably enough people have the boards now that you could try to organize some.

James,
actually reading the story and seeing the vids about the Kona Worlds in Miami is what got me thinking. Unfortunately, I can't take vacation time when I want to, so I could not have gone, but next year's worlds are in Denmark during the summer (when I am, unfortunately, forced to take vacation. all summer, no work, what a bummer Razz - it would be so much nicer to be off in the fall, but that is how things are.

thanks for the link.

btw, I really enjoy your blog.

Whew, I'm sorry I missed this.

I'm a Kona One sailor on the Hudson and it's a great all-around board. Am I winning races? No, not really, but it's a nice board for shifty conditions. I've sailed it on an 8.5 to a 5.3. The daggerboard is really nice to have, especially when dealing with currents and tides at the same time.

I'm not a racer, but I did do okay during some of the Windfest races on my Kona. I'm only an intermediate sailor but the Kona gave me a nice low-wind advantage over most of the other boards. Even with a terrible start and a sail one square meter below the maximum, I was in the first half of one of my races and the first third in another. In a higher wind race I would have been trounced, but there the board really shined.

Bring your Kona One to some MOWIND (http://www.mowind.org/wp/) events in the Midwest in the summer. Check out the calendar, tell us which events you are coming to so the other Kona One sailors will be more likely to attend. It only takes 5 of us at an event to make a class that will be scored separately. You can communicate with us by joining the MOWIND group on Yahoo http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/mowind/

The June 11-12 Windsurfing Regatta & Unvarnished Music Festival in Worthington MN is one of the events most likely to have enough Kona One entries for a separate class. In addition to the racing there's an eclectic group of music concerts in the late afternoons and evenings.

I'll be at Worthington with my Kona One which I'm getting at the end of this month. I believe there will be 3-4 others there too who I know have a Kona One. The more often we show up at races with Konas the more likely a few other racers will switch. MOWIND has a number of racers who gave up on the A fleet to get out of the equipment wars. I think some of them will move to Kona when there are enough Kona boards to consistently have a Kona class.

Great to find this thread.
Thought Kona One's were history. Now I have found the website and may go to some of the races.
They are still being made.
Even found advice on how to patch the spot that hit the garage door that was too low.
