MotionX GPX output below. Looks like it's logging in irregular intervals (5-6 seconds), but the time stamp allows for correction:
Code:

I have found over the last several years that the Garmin Navman works well and is very durable. It's an armband unit.

also, you might want to check out the shadowboxlive for really detailed info. It's very pricey. I have one, but haven't used it yet. Will let you know when I do. ( I just recently got the windsurf mount so that it mounts under the mast base - that is, the plate is held by the mast foot screws.)

I like the idea of a GPS program that announces the speed while sailing. While there are many GPS programs for the iPhone, only very few announce the speed. The on I tried, [url="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/speed-talker/id306343423?mt=8"]Speed Talker[/url], does not log, and it has a delay of 5-8 seconds before speed changes are announced (tested while driving and hitting the brakes). It appears the software has to use a lot of dampening to get to the level of accuracy it has.

Has anyone actually used an iPhone or Android GPS app that does all of the following:
1. Log tracks (with time stamps) at 1 second (or greater) frequency that can be analyzed with GPS Action Replay etc.?
2. Announce speeds in a configurable manner (frequency, min. speed threshold)?
3. Provide reasonable accuracy and delays (ideally tested against GT-31 doppler results)?

MotionX has audio (countdown, time, distance, speed/pace) configurable in increments upwards of 1 minute.

It does not record track points at 1 hertz in default mode and I have not seen a way to tune the update frequency. However, with longer intervals, you might just miss burst speeds, but if you do not need to record highly accurate tracks at high speeds, the battery savings may outweigh that disadvantage.

Lost a Garmin 305 GPS today at Roosevelt using the taped freezer bag to sail technique . The bag tore open at the bottom (tape was covering this area) after a wonderful laydown jibe. I thought it was a bird flying by, sad to say it was my GPS and it has now joined all the other treasures on the bottom of the river. Sad

I lost a Forerunner 305 due to the strap letting go. I sailed with it 40 sessions maybe? Water intrusion never got me despite the low water rating.

My Forerunner 110 seemed more water tight. It lasted 7 months but finally died.

My current thinking is to use the 205/305 (dep if you want HR) but also replace the strap with the velcro system. I am leaning to strapping it to the mast but haven't tried this yet. Prices dropped to $120 or so, meaning they are 1/3 of the price of an XT.

Garmin Connect (cloud-based fitness app) is neat.

Ideally I want realtime audio feedback on speed. At 30+mph you don't want to be looking at stupid watch. The iPhone/Android in pack seems the way to go here. Does anyone know what software would work in this situation?

Careful! The Forerunner 205 is only rated to IPx7 for waterproofness. That's "1 meter depth for up to 30 minutes"

I decided to go with the Forerunner 305, $128 at Amazon, cheap!: http://tinyurl.com/3d7uq8u

I also purchased the velcro strap accessory, just can't stand those plastic straps: http://tinyurl.com/3pf7mpk

It's only IPX7 water resistant, however, mine has held up to multiple SUP and windsurfing dunk sessions so far with no issues (yet). I agree with Vic, Garmin Connect is a pretty slick and easy way of uploading your GPS sessions (and posting summaries to a blog, if that's your thing), example: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/101546154

It's been over a year someone wrote on this thread.
I am on the market for a useful GPS for speed sailing / tracking.

What's out there now? What do you recommend?

If you are planing to post your sessions on gpsspeedsurfing.com or gpsteamchallenge web site, Locosys GT31 is the way to go.
Available from GPS Store. http://www.midwestspeedquest.com/page31/page31.html

I am wondering if there is any point in having the model with BlueTooth for windsurfing.
Can the bluetooth be used for downloading data or is it just for the GPS receiver connection?
