I meant downtown Hood River. Maybe you knew that.

If the meadows is one of the best mountains in the US, then Isobars is one the most laid back dudes in the Gorge.

Come on johnl, if isobars hadn't of crossed the line in the beginning, he wouldn't have suffered any grief. But as history would readily attest, isobars can't help but get in trouble. You've been here long enough to know that.

yeah, that is true, but the constant gang rape is getting kind of old. I agree that he frequently steps out of bounds, but it always seems to be several people who have to snap at him. That gets old. A FAR easier way is if his post irritates you, then let it go. Responding to it just fuels the fire....

Best mountains??? Hmm, granted I haven't skied it, but to compare it to Squaw, Alpine Meadows, and Park City just to name a few??? Hmmmm

Unfortunately a rock climbing fall messed up my foot and ski boots don't agree with me. So it appears my skiing days are over. I'm still going to give boarding a chance since it's boots are far more forgiving....

But in town pickup??? Are you sure about that? I know they are supposed to have a bus for employees that picks up but my understanding is that it's not for skiers.

Hey Ben,

I am only semi-local, but my van does have Oregon plates and
I do have a residence in HR. Maybe it's because of my plates, maybe
it's because people have seen me around for 20 years, but the people
in HR are just plain nice! I love the environment. Almost nobody
(except the obvious tourist) is in a hurry, and the pace of life is really
conducive to lowering your blood pressure.

In the Winter it can be very gray, rainy, and icy in cold years. That
typically lasts from late October through Mid March. If that sort of
weather gets you down, just spend your Winter on Maui ;*) or in
Baja. I've sailed all the months but December and January there,
and I've had great times at both ends of the season, but the cold weather
sailing does have a risk associated with it. You can also get out of the
gray drizzle by going East (like past Rufus East).

Spring is pretty sweet out East, Summer is Sweet down town, and Fall
is nice both West and East. For a small town, there's a lot going on during
the Summer with 1st Fridays, and a host of other events and attractions.
Be aware also that the river rarely gets above 75 degrees, so rubber is
required most of the sailing season. If you don't like that, you're not
gonna like da riva.

With your circumstances, I think you should try it for a year (or 2).
You should know by then if it's to your liking or not.

Anyway, I resonate with the place. I cried tears of joy when my wife
said "maybe we should get a residence in HR". 8 years later I still love it
(and so does she). I've had the opportunity (twice) to make HR my
permanent residence, and declined both times, but that is another story.

I can tell you how this administration would respond to [a CA bailout] request, because they already have, with a a big fat NO. To wit:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/15/AR2009061503249.html

Your article was published in June, 2009, when CA was merely GOING broke, not ALREADY declared broke by its two governors. Even then, in the very article you cite, the administration was already tap dancing:
“Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner, top White House economists Lawrence Summers and Christina Romer, and other senior officials have decided that California could hold on a little longer … These policymakers continue to watch the situation closely and do not rule out helping the state if its condition significantly deteriorates [they’re now broke; that’s a deterioration], a senior administration official said. In testimony before Congress, Geithner did not rule out aiding California. But he was far from enthusiastic about such a proposal, instead suggesting that Congress was better positioned to help the states [as though it’s not a bailout because Congress rather than the administration doles out the money?]”

That’s not a “big fat NO”; it’s a “Dudes, we gotta ram Obamacare down everybody’s throat first, and we can fool only so many fools at one time; ”hold on a little longer” and we’ll see what we can do through the Congress for CA.”

How dare you claim that pensions for soldiers who risk and often give their lives for your sorry ass constitute any form of unearned socialist dole? Do you hereby publicly swear to forfeit your retirement benefits, including SS, Medicare, 401k, and any other forms of remuneration you earned through your cushy safe little job?

1: Who ever said I questioned the entitlement to a pension? My point is irrefutable: when the government taxes MY earnings, and gives it to others, including military personnel, it is a form of socialism. YOU conflate the term with "unearned dole" not me.

2: I am 35 years old. I fully expect to get nothing in the way of SS or Medicare. It's YOUR generation hoovering up the wealth, and mine expected to pay for it.

3: Please advise which "cushy little job" you are referring to. I am self employed and have been for years. Choking dust, eating crow, and busting my ass to stay afloat. I've now achieved some financial stability for the first time in my life, and if you had ever had to make it in the private sector, you would appreciate how difficult that is.

1. YOU said servicemen’s (military and by logical extension, firemen, police, etc.) pensions are welfare (unearned government handouts). That’s at least as bad as spitting on them, as it dismisses as valueless the extreme risks and sacrifices they face for your benefit. Besides, funding servicemen via taxes is right there in the Constitution. You owe a major wet kiss on the sweaty ass to every military and civilian serviceman that ever lived in ANY country ... French-style to those who directly risked and/or gave their lives expressly to oppose any form of socialism or communism. Until you realize that, you aren’t worth a severed leg or a section of intestines in a military hospital biohazard dumpster.

2. I paid far more into Medicare and SS … much more than you have … than I expect to get from them, too. I support -- and your generation should DEMAND -- the phase-out of SS (for obvious reasons) and a total overhaul of Medicare (because something like half of its entire budget goes straight to fraud, as I’ve cited before). But what’s that got to with servicemen’s pensions EARNED by time or disability, yet declared by you as welfare?

3. Your insinuation that your job equates to servicemen’s because the economy is rough ranks among the dumbest and most insulting statements I’ve ever seen or heard. Go tell it to the GI who hasn’t slept in two days but is running on one real leg and one titanium leg through a hail of bullets while wearing a 90-pound pack in 125-degree heat; she’d laugh her rock-hard ass off at you and begin second-guessing her devotion to risking everything for your right to be an unappreciative ass. Is it her fault you chose to be self-employed and scrape by? What’s stopping you from taking her place on the battlefield? She has kids, too, and I’ve seen 34-yo guys get drafted and 50-somethings go into combat zones voluntarily. One of the main differences between you and her is her selfless dedication to duty and country.

As for my never having had to “make it in the private sector”:
• I’ve had at least six jobs in the private sector, ranging from professional jobs with Boeing and DuPont to manual construction labor to being self-employed. I put my butt through 6 years of full time college with most of those jobs.
• Sorry, guy, but compared even to even non-combat jobs in the military, most self-employment or corporate jobs are a wet dream in the Playboy Mansion. You couldn’t even comprehend the constraints, regulations, demands, or expectations leveled on servicemen’s personal and work lives, their families and separation therefrom, their morals and ethics and behavior … not to mention the fact that every active duty (and most retired) serviceman can be ordered into combat at any time. Are you subject to court martial, dismissal from your cushy little job, and/or prison if you come to work late one day because you have a hangover, or a sprained ankle, or a sunburn, or don’t work 140 hours a week when so ordered, or look at internet porn, or flunk your physical fitness test, or accept a free lunch from a contractor, or made a morale-boosting video which PC civilian pussies consider offensive? We are, and have been.

No, actually, now I'm just insulting you. You decry the government's grasping, wasteful, spendthrift ways, yet you are the direct beneficiary of it.

No, actually, your claim that any serviceman’s pension is welfare spits in the face of every one of them, as they all operate under the same set of rules. Anyone who regards service to one’s community or nation as inherently “grasping, wasteful, spendthrift government ways”, is not only insane but a hypocrite a) if he supports any political party and b) because he benefits directly from their service.

pacspeed wrote:
stooping to the "You're lucky you're behind a keyboard" is simply laughable. Everyone's a tough guy on the internet, and you're apparently the toughest of them all.

Although most active duty servicemen would have too much self-control and unit pride to respond appropriately to your saying or doing anything so despicable to them, I suffer neither constraint. I don’t know for a fact how I’d react if I saw you degrade a serviceman or veteran face to face (if you’re that stupid and bold), but I suspect you don’t want to find out. Especially if s/he were sporting a combat badge or prosthetic limb and still chose to spare you, don’t count on my being so generous. Tip: I’d rate you right up there with the slime who assaulted my fiance twice on a ski slope 42 years ago this month and has never forgotten what happened next. How fitting that his own momentum from his second assault was used against him so effectively!

BTW, you’re fortunate to have me rather than my wife in your face over your denigration of servicemen. She has spent more years, working with more combat servicemen, from broader backgrounds, on more continents, in the bowels of more Air Force and Navy combat vessels, on bigger weapons programs, at both higher and lower levels of command, than I have. A blast from her would leave your whining ears burning for years. When I half-joked that I should forward your belittlement of servicemen to the Pentagon, she suggested an alternative destination: the CIA or special forces. She thinks that lowly of you in comparison with even the least of the heroes her career exposed her to.

I don't care if these uninformed ratbags get in my face, but I draw the line when they demean all servicemen, including by implication you.

Back on topic:
Kennewick (TriCities) WA climate is warm during summer when temperatures tend to be in the 70's [I guess that means 24-hour averages] and very cold during winter when temperatures tend to be in the 30's.

The warmest month of the year is July with an average maximum temperature of 89.30 degrees Fahrenheit, while the coldest month of the year is January with an average minimum temperature of 28.00 degrees Fahrenheit.

Temperature variations between night and day tend to be moderate during summer with a difference that can reach 28 degrees Fahrenheit, and fairly limited during winter with an average difference of 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

The annual average precipitation at Kennewick is 8.01 Inches. Rainfall in is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. The wettest month of the year is December with an average rainfall of 1.16 Inches.

[In my 11 winters here, snow has never been a problem for anyone with appropriate vehicle and/or tires. Many, probably most, people don't bother with snow tires. What this means to the really dedicated -- read: nuts -- local WSers is that each winter's coldest days may interfere with their windsurfing a few days a year. I'd guess the local international airport is closed by fog (mostly) or snow (rarely) several days per year. Wintertime sun seems random both daily and seasonally. I moved here from the land of eternal sunshine (NM) and pay much more attention to wind than to precip or sunshine. I bought a coat in upstate NY and flip flops in Albuquerque, so I'm all set.]
