Early this season I was in Hood River and friendly Aussie at the beach mentioned there are some good GPS speedsurfing days around October and November in Portland area. Now I found this:

http://www.pacifier.com/~rcbrds/chinook.html

and this:

http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?w0=t&w1=td&w2=wc&w3=sfcwind&w3u=1&w4=sky&w5=pop&w6=rh&w7=thunder&w8=rain&w9=snow&w10=fzg&w11=sleet&AheadHour=48&FcstType=graphical&textField1=46.29097&textField2=-123.95325&site=rev&unit=0&dd=0&bw=0&BackDay.x=64&BackDay.y=12

Could this Saturday and Sunday morning turn out to be one of those days?

It looks like it should be windy there.

G'day Boris,

speed season up here is about to open but probably not this weekend. Wind has a little bit too much east in it as the low is staying offshore. The frontal band needs to hit around 9-10:00 AM Sunday morning to coincide with the tides...big ask. The NOAH forecast tends to be more for the offshore waters, it's a bit optimistic when it comes to what happens onshore. Here's one of the forecasts I have set up for the speed course "ARooBar" http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=119475
Try this Google Earth overlay to see where we sail: http://www.ka72.com/viewge.aspx?fid=4311&tid=0

Just in the process of setting up a real time wind measuring system for the course, it will be live on the net once hooked up. Would be great if it does blow on Sunday, be nice to register a speed for the HAM Challenge on 10/10/10

Roo, Boris, et al,

May the wind be with you!

Here's your live wind & forecasts for ARooBar on iWindsurf's alternative website, WindAlert:

USA-WA-Chinook:
http://windalert.com/windsurf/en-us/Favorites/ViewFavorites.aspx?pid=124706

WindAlert features the same NOAA / NWS forecasts. On WindAlert, just click on any of the live wind numbers on the map (or the ARooBar forecast spot) for the scoop.

A custom forecast for ARooBar is included, but depending on wind conditions, the Cape Disappointment, Clatsop Spit, and even Columbia River Bar forecasts may be more accurate for ARooBar. Check 'em all.

For live wind, the Cape Disappointment, Clatsop Spit, and Columbia River Bar weather stations should all be of interest to speed demons in the area.

These stations are all also available on WindAlert's iPhone and Android apps -- for checking winds as you're heading to the beach.

Roo, if you do install your own weather station near ARooBar and want it to be available for free to everyone on iWindsurf and WindAlert, as well as WindAlert iPhone and Android apps, just give the iWindsurf team a heads-up:

Aroobar does not exist and never did . you will never find it on a map.

Lets be real here guys. The name of this site is Chinook County Park. that is what the sign says at the site and where many of us sail.

The US Sailing record is held here by Derek Nielson. http://www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx?mnu=user&val=55034&uid=2009

Full documentation is on the net by Mark Boydston who located the site a few years back for speed sailing. It was he who brought others there, although it had been recreational windsurfed occasionally since the 80's.

http://www.pacifier.com/~rcbrds/chinook.html

it was Mark, a top speed sailor who told the rest of us who speed sail about it.

Thanks for the history lesson. I like ARooBar in Chinook County Park unless you can tell us real name for this particular sandbar.

The Park is Chinook County Park. The locals call it "The Sandbar" much in the way we in Hood River call a similar feature "The Sandbar".

Some maps do label the sandbar "Sand Island"

Maybe you could go there and look at the sign. This is Chinook County Park as clearly The Fish Hatchery is the Fish Hatchery.

Chinook County Park it is, out front is the sandbar, sometimes called Sand Island

Hmmmm, I still like ARooBar better.

G'day Boris,

here's a chart that gives you a better idea where ARooBar is, nowhere near Sand Island.

Aroobar is a fabrication and a lie!

Aroobar does not exist never did! Going to a place you did not even find and were nowhere close to sailing first does not qualify an Australian citizen (or American) to name it after himself that already has a name!

The location is Chinook County Park!

Read the signs!
