NatGeo aired a documentary based on the 143-day, 6-7 hours a day, interrogation of Saddam Hussein by FBI agent George Pirot. The story looked very genuine to me. A few interesting highlights include:
• They sat facing one another almost knee-to-knee, with no restraints. No enhanced techniques, just conversation. The whole objective was simple: encourage complete and open discussion.
• 126 full days into the interrogation, while they were discussing Saddam’s poetry and speech writing in June of '04, the conversation led to Saddam’s casual explanation of why he had to falsely claim, and convince his officers, that he still had WMDs: “Iraq’s greatest enemy is Iran, not the US. If Iran had discovered Iraq no longer had WMDs, they would have immediately invaded.”
• He added weeks later that as long as his regional enemies had WMDs, he had to maintain his WMD manufacturing capabilities in a fully ready state.
• When their interaction ended, Saddam warmly embraced Pirot, gave him the triple cheek-kiss customary among his friends, and said he regarded Pirot more warmly than he did his own sons. Pirot had no desire to attend Saddam’s hanging, saying that although Saddam clearly deserved it, they had been too emotionally close for too long for him to take any satisfaction in the event.

I consider the documentary generally credible because Saddam had little current intelligence of urgent use, he's tough, the FBI seems to go by the book, it went on for about 5 months, the agent seemed genuine, this was
NatGeo not PBS, it didn't address politics, ...

Effective interrogation by the book, without waterboarding? Who'd have thought?
