Looking like it is going to be an La Nina winter. Anyone know what impact La Nina has on the wind conditions in La Ventana and Baja?

I have heard that El Nino's are not good for Baja wind; what about La Nina?

in costa rica it means it will be a fantastic wind year. BUT, baja is thermal and costa rica is trade winds. so, your results may (will) vary.

but it begs the question: why go to baja over costa rica? it's WAAAAAAAAYYYYY more consistently windy in costa rica. as in, EVERY day there's good, strong wind.

You can drive to Baja Sur with your dogs, cats and all of your toys.

The winds are not bad either. Very Happy

D

that makes good sense for those who want to make the drive (which i'd love to do one day...)

i've gone to baja every winter for 16 years now. after a couple years i gave up trying to windsurf and now just lay in the sun and read. the winds are just too fickle and unreliable for a short-duration trip.

that's the only reason i recommended costa rica. it's windy EVERY day. ALL winter.

Please tell me more. I'm endlessly bombarded with various forms of "You've GOT to go to Baja, Dude! It's fantastic." Of all the pros and cons I've heard, read, and listed, that's a new one on me.

Examples:
Where do you go?
Are you rejecting good surf-sailing when it requires a 6.0?
What time of the year do you go?
For how long?
Expand on "fickle" ... only 3 solid hours five days a week, or much worse?
Do you weigh 275 pounds and sail only sinkers?
Do you own Tico Winds?
Describe the sailing at Arenal. What Gorge venue might it best compare to?
What book is worth driving 5,000 miles for?

to preface, no, i don't own ticowinds. i just sail with them in the winters. nice peeps.

in baja i go to the cabo area where i have a timeshare. i would go to lod barilles every year for another week but gave up.

i was there in both the end of december and also the end of march. for one week each.

i am rejecting 6.0 sailing b/c i weigh 200 lbs and prefer to be powered. 60 to most if 7.4 to me. if you're lighter, 6.0 could definitely work. and there are stronger days.

"fickle" is many sequential days without wind. no thank you.

ahhh... my favorite sibject: arenal. what an unbelievable, fantastic, dynamic WIND MACHINE arenal is. it's killer B&J, all...day...long. and night too. i can count the times i've sailed 6.0 there on one hand. in 10 years of going. and there are plenty of days in the 4.7 to 5.5 category as well.

it compares best to gorge sailing, rather than bay area sailing. and i would put it most closely to a choppier version of evening sessions at dougs. less swell, more chop. 85 degrees all day. jungle. monkeys. CLEAN fresh water that 75 degrees.

everyone should try it once.

There's a thread on here about this already. Consensus was: it's going to be windy.
