What area of the hook can kites launch or ride? A kiter launched in the middle of kids and beginners learning to water-start in the middle of the outside of the hook. They crashed their kite hard twice. Once almost into some people entering the water. Once almost into some cars parked above the rocks. What's the port rule? Can the port ask violators to leave?

Whomever launched their kite there is completely clueless not only about the safety of others, but extreme hazard to themselves as well. Launching on the west side of the hook is a REALLY bad idea. The only safe place to launch is on the north side, with kiter in the water. Even that is a tricky launch.

I don't know of a single Hood River local who would launch on the west side.

Eric

Where were these kids' parents? Nobody launches a kite over a RESPONSIBLE parent's kids' heads at a beach where kids are commonly allowed to play.

I believe they were out of state. The windsurf launch paths need to be more clearly marked. They'll probably launch and ride there again today.

I would agree, but a lot of adults are clueless about the dangers of kites. Until some incident happens. You normally don't see kites at the hook.

The hook is too gusty for safe kiting.

Fully agree. That's why I inform the parents when I see kids in real danger, and would usually speak/act if I thought the danger was real and imminent. I can understand their ignorance, but not their unwillingness to solve problems like that.

BTW, talk to the endangered kids' Mom, not Dad. Dads are clueless wusses, but (most) mothers (i.e., female parents) won't take any crap from anybody if they perceive a danger to their kids. I've had to intervene only once when a Mom refused to act.

I've had my family there for the past 3 days. Frankly I was shocked by the kites flying west of the hook. I didn't want to start a rumble because I'm from out of town, and my wife might not like it, but if I see it tomorrow I'll be talking to the offender.

There were dozens of kids around, including my own.

I would not hesitate for one second to " start a rumble" with someone launching on the west end. It's totally stupid at best and totally arrogant at worst. It's not only dangerous to the kids and others there it is very dangerous for the person launching.. Do not hold back in these cases, get in their face and let them know that what they are doing in unacceptable...They may not know enough to understand the possible consequences to others and them. : Mad Mad
