I gather you've never tried the Gorge in late Oct. Next to an uncrowded, rock-steady, stinking hot, summer thermal day in board shorts/rash guard/ and harness on a 4.0 dawn-'til-dark on 8-foot glassy swell, Oct can come in a close second in terms of sheer beauty and emotional charge. Gorgeous colors on the trees, deep blue skies, ankle-deep crunchy leaves underfoot, frequent (if we're lucky) hard steady winds with good to great swell, a steamer plus bare hands/head/feet, no crowds (otherwise I wouldn't mention it) except on the more spectacular east wind days when the place is packed ... the only bummer is that it signals that within a month or two another $#!++^ sailing season in the $#!++^ Gorge ends for us wusses who don't do gloves or booties. Bottom line: As long as it's windy, I hardly notice Gorge weather during the sailing season except for two scenarios: 1) when it's too damned hot to breathe and 2) when there are gorgeous colors on the trees, deep blue skies, ankle-deep crunchy leaves underfoot, frequent (if we're lucky) hard steady winds with good to great swell ... the other 6 months of the season are a blur, because the only weather that really matters is the weather next to our skin, which we can control.
