Okay, a bit presumptuous on my part maybe, but still.

Sun's Current Solar Activity Cycle Is Weakest in a Century

By Mike Wall, Senior Writer | December 11, 2013 06:50pm ET

SAN FRANCISCO — The sun's current space-weather cycle is the most anemic in 100 years, scientists say.

Our star is now at "solar maximum," the peak phase of its 11-year activity cycle. But this solar max is weak, and the overall current cycle, known as Solar Cycle 24, conjures up comparisons to the famously feeble Solar Cycle 14 in the early 1900s, researchers said.

"None of us alive have ever seen such a weak cycle. So we will learn something," Leif Svalgaard of Stanford University told reporters here today (Dec. 11) at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

The learning has already begun. For example, scientists think they know why the solar storms that have erupted during Solar Cycle 24 have caused relatively few problems here on Earth.

The sun often blasts huge clouds of superheated particles into space, in explosions known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Powerful CMEs that hit Earth squarely can trigger geomagnetic storms, which in turn can disrupt radio communications, GPS signals and power grids.

But such effects have rarely been seen during Solar Cycle 24, even though the total number of CMEs hasn't dropped off much, if at all. The explanation, researchers said, lies in the reduced pressure currently present in the heliosphere, the enormous bubble of charged particles and magnetic fields that the sun puffs out around itself.

This lower pressure has allowed CMEs to expand greatly as they cruise through space, said Nat Gopalswamy of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Indeed, Solar Cycle 24 CMEs are, on average, 38 percent bigger than those measured during the last cycle — a difference with real consequences for folks here on Earth.

"When the CMEs expand more, the magnetic field inside the CMEs has lower strength," Gopalswamy said. "So when you have lower-strength magnetic fields, then they cause milder geomagnetic storms."

Many of us take the sun for granted, giving it little thought until it scorches our skin or gets in our eyes. But our star is a fascinating and complex object, a gigantic fusion reactor that gives us life. How much do you know about the sun?

Scientists also think they know why relatively few super-fast solar energetic particles, or SEPS, have been measured in Earth's neighborhood during the current cycle, which began in early 2008. It has to do with a weakened interplanetary magnetic field, another characteristic of Solar Cycle 24, they say.

Large SEP events, which can pose a danger to astronauts in Earth orbit, are created by the shock waves driven by CMEs. But fewer of these particles are getting accelerated by such shocks these days, said Joe Giacalone of the University of Arizona.

"When the magnetic field is weaker, the particles are not trapped near the shock as effectively," Giacalone said. "They're going much farther upstream and downstream of the shock wave, and it takes a lot longer for them to get to very high energies."

The strength or weakness of a solar cycle appears to be driven by the intensity of the sun's polar magnetic field during the previous cycle. The polar field is thought to feed the sunspots— dark and relatively cool patches on the sun that are the source of CMEs and solar flares — that come in during the next cycle, Gopalswamy said.

The polar field was weak during Solar Cycle 23, so researchers suspected that Solar Cycle 24 would be underwhelming. Predictions about Solar Cycle 25 should start coming in two or three years, when the polar field reappears, Svalgaard said.

Does this prove anything?
They don't really know yet, in fact there are many things about the sun and global warming that they aren't totally sure of yet.
But I find this solar science fascinating, hardly doom and gloom.

Come on bajaDean, you need to take a chill pill and relax. I don't have a clue why you went off on G.T. I always enjoy G.T.'s lively input and spirit, especially since he's one of our brothers across the pond. Even if he did somehow strike a nerve with you, you're not showing much reserve. Best to be cautious and not too quick to show your teeth.

So true GT! As they say, "perspective is everything". I'd probably be a liberal, but there are so many of them, they've overwhelmed the system. Living in California, I just have to take the other side of the argument. Laughing

I think the last time I checked California was 60%+ liberal voters. The state government is completely dominated by Democrats. They have a veto proof majority in the state senate.

As you know, I don't like any government except small government. World history proves my theory. If the state were completely dominated by the John Birch society, I'd probably swing liberal. I just don't like seeing either side in power for too long. This isn't a football game you know. There are a lot of power hungry egomaniacs who want control of the gravy train. My purpose is to keep the oligarchs and socialists at bay.

My verbal defense is well deserved.

Again my father was president of the human rights council for my area and helped the first black family (a friend from his work, a national lab) move into our town and the police had to even be parked in front of our home from the constant right wing death threats. I have had a KKK idiot come up to me with a gun and say he is going to clean it and accidents happen when cleaning a gun when I would not accept his offer to pay for a ticket for me to go debate the grand dragon of Texas. Have had a el rushbio fan who was arrested but the country did not prosecute him for stealing hundreds of the dem signs because it was a right wing county. He made the mistake of assuming that I new business owner in the town (rio vista)was a right winger and he was bragging about it. I said he had no right to do it and he said Rush would be proud of him, i then said he should have been put on trial.

and the topper is one of my best friends (from growing up) his brother was killed in cold blood by a right wing hater because he walked out of a gay bar. No words were exchanged and neither had ever seen one another before.

I am sick of people condoning and allowing trolls to become McVeighs. After all McVeigh is a hero to many in the right wing. These trolls need to know their is no excuse for their real hate behavior.

BTW I profiled the anthrax mailer right away and saw a FBI profiler on a talk show saying it was middle east terrorists and I knew it was a domestic right winger right away. I emailed him right after the show and I will give him credit he did dialog with me. But he would not accept my point so they let the trail go dry for several months. His point is one of the letters was mailed to a media outlet that was right wing. I tried to explain to him that the typical right wing wacko is so brain washed that all media is liberal. He would not buy it but as we know it absolutely was not ME, and because they did not go after domestic terrorists when the clues were fresh they lost the evidence trail. A few years later I have run into a poll that would have convinced this FBI profiler, it was a pew poll where I think about 18% of the self identified conservatives claimed Fox was liberal. thus again proving my thesis how deranged a large part of the ultra right wingers are.

Good thing you tore a strip off of GT. I think he was making his own Oklahoma City plans.

coming out from under your bridge again. the little troll that you are as I have noted before. you really add nothing as usual to any discussion.

When you can not add it just proves you have lost so thoroughly.

maybe someday you can be the water boy... but you need to stop your crying game first.

Not that anyone particular cares about an overzealous psycho with an axe to grind referring to them as a troll but I do love the reasoning you give for your "well deserved verbal defense".

I guess according to your school of reason my friend who was raped by a Catholic Priest as a young boy should be able to make just about any disparaging comment about homosexuals, priests, and the Catholic church then right? No, instead he didn't tear a strip off anyone, but instead he is a counsellour with the Children's Aid Society. Maybe you could recognize as he did that it wasn't the organization of the Catholic Church, the homosexual community, or the brotherhood of priests who caused his pain but the individual who committed the offence against him. He can argue the same as you that they protect these types and seemingly encourage their behaviour, and I'm sure that thought crosses his mind. At the same time he's not walking around with a huge chip on his shoulder looking for a fight around every corner either.

I can agree with many of your points and understand the roots of your disgust too, but I'm sorry to say this but your McVeigh-ish attitude towards others is coming off as the hate you are so quick to attach to anyone who even slightly cross examines your stand.

PS
They keep the "chill pills" in aisle three on the right side, right next to the tissues. You'll need some of those too.

Quote; ... 'They don't really know yet.'

The point some of us have continually made N.W. As we keep saying, (and many once convinced of the consensus now admit), the next 10 or so years may help settle the matter, one way or the other.

In the meantime, we just have to wait.

well my little troll, the issue here is as I have told you before, again you can go back to where Gurgletrousers in this thread and you the psycho serial troll start it. I posted facts about the subject. And GT went for the throat of me, again he went McVeigh. He had absolutely no right to do this. He had any right to attack my concepts I presented as to the fact that the right wing backed the cigarette paid off scientists who for 40 or more years always said they were "safe". and that as I pointed out these tobacco companies are small specs vs what the oil companies make. And how in one day the largest one in the USA has 4 times the revenue of the USA's largest Union has in an entire year. that there is virtually no way to fight a 1200 to one revenue disparity in the media of paid propaganda. So wheat did GT do he went after me not the facts position I posted.

And you a serial troll defend this activity with your cover the pedophiles back mentality you are so bringing up. You are no different than the people who covered up and enabled more pedophile behavior. You are a part of the problem not in anyway a solution.

Yep I will point out your sicko back up the McVeigh/Nazi/KKK type have your back when you did wrong hate posts. Yes you are an enabler of the KKK type of cover my haters back, real hate and from what i have seen a instigator.

BTW this support your KKK type buddy is well ingrained in the right wing party, just look at the convictions in the right wing party of the USA with Nixon, Reagan administrations. And that is why the KKK, skin heads, neo Nazis, are not required to leave the right wing party. They are part and core of the right wing party in the USA. There are many good right wingers but when they do not demand that these trolls that act like you get out of their party yes I believe they are enabling the McVeighs among them.

Again as I told you many right wingers in the righty wing party in the USA believe in McVeigh was right. Just as I pointed out in one state about 40% of the right wing say inter racial marriage should be a jailable offense. These are KKK ish loving people. Again huge percentage of the got you back covered sickos who want these haters in their party.

Again you are not even a american so you have no clue to the effects of the cover your back mentality of the usa. you do not have the right wing terrorism that we have in the USA like the McVeighs and church shooters, mosque shooters and so on.

See we have a green party in the USA that I do not agree with their small fringe and they are not welcome to the democratic party. but their fringe are nothing compared to the right wing KKK, and McVeigh.
