| If I recollect correctly, the sale of assault rifles had been banned for a period of time. It was President Bush that ultimately lifted the ban. However, when the ban was in effect, it's my understanding that it was related to the sale of new weapons, and didn't affect those that already owned such a weapon, so there was no issue of confiscation. |

You recall correctly SW however I think the law expired rather than was lifted by Bush. _________________ {JP:}====**** |

swchandler,
You are correct, no confiscations, just conservative concerns. But when things are not sold anymore, but can be legally owned and re-sold, I doubt that that would have much of an impact regarding the psychos wanting to kill people. The resale market would flourish and a future ban would no doubt cause a huge rush on the current inventory.
Still plenty of guns for a nut-case to do his/her deed. |

| Is it safer to be hit by a bullet from a semi automatic hunting rifle rather than one from an assault weapon? Or would hunting weaponry be included in the "clear cutting" and the return to 1791 standards? |

| I dont know what was so wrong from 1994-2002 when the assualt weapons ban was in effect, unless you were a gun shop owner. Mr Gybe, lets do a deal right here. You give me the assault weapons ban, I will lift the objection to more forrest clearing....you in? |

Depends on the shooter. Charles Whitman used a bolt action hunting rifle and was quite effective. _________________ {JP:}====**** |

Is that an attempt of a Archie Bunker joke along the lines of "would it make you fel any better if they was pushed out of windows..."? _________________ florian - ny22

You are missing the point. What is achieved by banning AR-15s (so called assault rifles) if hunting rifles with similar capability are not also banned? They are both lethal in the wrong hands. |

| The original point was that extremists in both partys keep real legislation from getting done. This point was well illustrated by Technoo, and I followed with another example which led to the current discussion. I think you must draw the line at some point with regards to firepower. You should read some of the anecdotals of cops doing battle with gang bangers , and other bad guys who have serious artillary. If we chop off the head, eventually the stream of assualt weaponry will die. |
