Hey snazzy4, you need to get a clue about history.

The past does live into the future to some degree, but maybe I'm one of the only folks that can see it that way.

Didn't the war in Afghanistan begin shortly after 9/11 at the will and direction of the Bush/Cheney Administration? Facts like that don't lie.

But, seemingly you think a bit differently, and you're so fresh on the scene. Why don't you enlighten us.

I thought I was the only one scratching my head over the new troop deployment.

What is it we are trying to win when we have no clearly defined goal, other than search for Al Queda and the Tallyban. Our troops deserve a clear mission they can not only be proud of, but one that is clearly vital to America.

I saw a special on the road clearing crews. They drive this $3 Million rig down the same 10 mile road every two to three days to clear road side bombs. They drive until it blows up, haul it back to base and rebuild it, then repeat. If they see terrorists, they cannot shoot unless engaged.

Ridding that country of terrorists is the equivalent of ridding the U.S. restaurant business of cockroaches. Its not going to happen and the people will never support the U.S. Puppet Karzai.

As for paying for the abysmal mess, how's that Visa slogan go??

Obama's backpeddling on this one is concerning.

True. However, with the recent military successes of the Taliban, it would be days before they would march into Kabul after a US troop withdrawal. The current engagement is a slower path to the same result.

The good news is that AlQuaida and its satellites seem to become more unpopular in the aera. In Pakistan, public support for suicide-bombings (amazing enough there is such a thing) is dwindling.

A troop surge at this point might be the one thing that does not go perfectly according to the plan of AlQuaida and might buy time for other developments to go forward.

It now really depends on what else will be done in Afghanistan, besides more troops.

It is important to remember that the Taliban were not our enemy at one time and are not terrorists. They are a medieval government with an education of repeating Koran verses. They can be dealt with without killing them all. Karzai agrees and says the only reason he has not been able to deal with them is because of the Bush attitude that equated AlQueda with them.
Most Americans don't seeem to know the dif even now.

When we can no longer afford it, we'll stop sponsoring wars in other people's homes. Then we'll focus on our own problems.
Give the Afghans a way to earn a living in a legitimate international context & the Taliban will cease to exist.

I have no idea why Obama backed down on this - except a President is always a puppet of the true power structure.

Why can't we choose how our tax money is spent - then those who want war can pay for it.
Anyone else see the irony in a 'single payer' Military system, when we're afraid of a single payer health system?

Why The Face??

One, virtually all citizens are too ignorant to make decisions that big; that's why -- thank God and our Constitution's framers -- we're a Republic rather than a Democracy. We're not privy to the information the administration has, the impact of which was clearly demonstrated by Obama's understandable and telling about-face on several issues such as the Patriot Act and closing Gitmo once he gained access to facts he couldn't obtain as a mere campaigner.

Two, if all we had to do to avoid paying for our military was say, "I oppose it", only a few million people -- those who understand reality -- would contribute. Our nation would survive, what ... weeks ? ... with that budget? The Dept of Defense costs us a measly 4% of our GDP yet carries the lion's share of defending the free world. That's frigging CHEAP!

I think isobars is forgetting that the Bush/Cheney administration elected to conduct wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, but they didn't have the balls to raise taxes to paid for them. That's one of the reasons why we've got a huge deficit right now.

I'm sure that if the Obama Administration and Congress pressed to raise income taxes to pay for our wars abroad that isobars and his ilk would scream bloody murder.

That would also explain why he supports the health care leg.and intends to leave Afghanistan in 18 months. It is clear to both me and iso that the president is much better informed on all these issues.

There is some sense in the very old conservative idea of adding a section to the tax return in which you may list the ways that you want the money spent.
It would give our leaders a chance to justify the huge difference in distribution of spending from the will of the people whose money this is.
Casual experiments done by WH Buckley showed that most folks would spend a LOT more on education, and provide better training, equipment and pay to a smaller military. In that survey those respondents would give ZERO tax money to large corporations like oil companies.
