Lasr week the biggest wind event of the season(the remnants of Hurricane Ida) came through the area, bringing several days of NE-E flow with gale force conditions. I missed the 1st two days due to work, but Friday and Sat. I was ready.
When I tried to assess the wind conditions Friday morning to determine which venue would be best, I was unable to access the iwindsurf site. Finally the site was working after 10am - TOO LATE TO BE OF ANY USE TO ME!!!!! A friend had already informed me of the conditions and appropriate launch.
The next day I was, again, unable to access the iwindsurf site. The TV weather said the flow would be NE-ENE, so I drove to the northside looking for wind at Chapin/Mayflower. Bad call. The water was flat with offsore wind. There was talk of going to Sandy Neck, then someone told me that offshore sensors indicated 100 degrees, or slightly south of due east. Around 10am I stopped by my house en route to W. Dennis to find iwindsurf back online. Realtime wind showed winds were due east with slight variations.
No time to drive to Chatham, so I went to West Dennis and settled for sideshore, gusty 4.2 conditions.
I'm glad the website was restored, but inaccessibility at the crucial time(7-9am) made the service quite inadequate.
Just a guess here..... fewer subscribers this time of year means lower revenues. Iwindsurf reduced their server capacity to save money, figuring they could still handle the traffic from the remaining sub's.
When everyone tried to look at wind conditions first thing in the am, their system crashed.
To iwindsurf:
Please do not discount the value of your remaining subscribers. We are the people who sail 3 or even 4 seasons, we are the most devoted to our sport, we pay for this service year-round(not just for a couple of months when the weather is warm), and we deserve better than what we got from you last week. |
