"The National Weather Service said gusts in the San Francisco area hit 30 mph Tuesday. Caltans said that was enough to cause a 20-foot tie rod, which goes through load-bearing steel saddles on the cantilever section, to move back and forth, and eventually snap."

Geez... 30 MPH gusts were enough to cause failure? I sure hope they do a better job this time around.

Given the rarity of strong wind in the bay area, it's understandable how a minor detail like that could be overlooked...

Thank goodness it was designed to withstand up to 30 mph.

I shall immediately sell everything under 5.8.....

I'm sure if the rods had been made out of carbon fiber, this could never have happened.

We had loads more wind a week or two before this front went through... I think 50MPH when rain pushed pooh into the Bay.

I smell excuses. Heard it was "buzzing" (wind vibrations) that caused the saddle to wear through some of the strands of the cable so they eventually snapped.

Do you think they were not looking at this repair every day and didn't see the cables start to fray and suddenly not have enough strands to hold their load?

I don't think it takes an engineering degree to say this stinks.

Solution THEY SAY now is to put some neoprene between the metal saddle and cables... at least that is what I heard this AM on the radio.

Maybe they really didn't check this repair every day to make sure it was working and were surprised when it failed... Don't think I'll be taking that bridge for awhile....

I think the contract for the new east span should be given to Streamlined.

Maybe it was that kite that slammed into the bridge a few day ago.
That would certainly take out one of those Chinese made rods. Laughing

I have an old grey Ampro under my house...I'm actually waiting for it to become a collectors item.
