I agree, firefighter is a poor career choice. |

I knew many of the firefighters at the Oakland airport, and did training with them when an emergency occurred that caused them to scramble. They were combined with the City of Oakland's fire department to save money. Most people don't know that firefighters are the local government's leading edge in responses to hazardous materials spills and perform inspections services that prevent fires. Perhaps this is why fire damage is going down, despite local governments approving development in fire prone areas?
Never let the facts get in the way of an ideological rant. |

They don't go around spraying water on things to keep fires from starting There are less fires because of better knowledge about what starts home fires, fire sprinkler systems and modern construction techniques, amongst other things. Not because there are more firemen sitting around firehouses or sending ladder trucks out to calls when a homeless person falls down drunk. |

Why send a giant fire truck out to a fender bender to direct traffic? or when an old person feels ill? These are jobs for paramedics. They send the giant fire truck out to justify their jobs, give them something to do, make them look vital and important. |

Not really sure how this stat has been compiled and twisted but everyone I knew who was a fireman was making over $100K a year for what amounted to part time work. They all had second jobs and used the fireman job to catch up on sleep and get away from the wife and kids for a while.
Probably they are including in the data base all the volunteer fireman jobs which pay only for the time they are on a call, not all the time spent sleeping in the firehouse. |

Spot on Beagle!
Same thing exposed over here when their conditions of service were being reviewed, and strike was threatened. (Quite a revelation!) |

Army 'girls' perhaps RR?
You may have read about the pair of women army recruits who have successfully sued for compensation of £100,000 each for damage to their fragile bodies when, during training, they were forced to march with the same length of stride as the men!!!
It's perhaps fortunate that most of the brave generation of women who helped our country through the blitz, and suffered real hardship, and, in many cases fought bravely for our freedom, are now passed away.
These two are a disgrace to their sex. |
