Today I sailed The Access at Sherman. When I got out I de-rigged and changed into my clothes, and put on my Sperry's without socks, because my feet were wet and sandy. Took the dogs for a walk and when I got back to the car I took off my shoes and my feet were black. When I got home I took a bath, scrubbed my feet with a scrub brush and still, the black didn't come completely off. I left black footprints on the tub that won't come off. Anybody have any ideas what's up with that?
Coincidentally, I stopped at The Dead Fish for dinner on the way home. Ordered the Black Linguini with Clams. Asked the waitress what made the linguini black and she said squid ink. And yes, my feet were black before I left the Delta, so it wasn't the linquini.
Sherman was exceptional for October. Maybe just exceptional period.

Use goof off on your tub unless it's fiberglass. Use orange hand degreaser if it's fiberglass. |

Guessing you have the standard brown Sperry Topsider boating type shoe... My oddball guess is that some of the dye from the leather leached out onto your feet. Could have been exacerbated by the salts in the leather from sweaty feet that were re-activated by wet feet. Just a guess. |

I was at the access on sunday and I noticed a little black stuff on my toes too. Santa Barbara has that tar, is this some sort of petroleum product? Poor ol Jed barely kept his family fed and then one day he was shootin at some food when up from the ground came some bubblin crude? (and no I didn't have to look up the lyrics-is that bad?) |

All my boards have tarred-up decks, and the stuff always gets on fins too. Uniquely Santa Barbara. |

The Gaucho surfers in Santa Barbara used baby oil to remove the tar - works well.
reminds me of a scary indident.
Be thankful you didn't get the surprise I did at sherman. Coming out of the water near the gate to the pay parking, Felt a jab into my bare foot. Pulled my foot out of a grassy nook to find an old syringe hanging out of my foot. Didn't feel good about that until the HIV test was negative 6 months later.

Peanut oil works too. I worry about syringes at places like Marina Bay, Pt. Isabel. I would have been freaked out. |

Maybe that derelict boat's leaking something, is it still there?
Santa Barbara has a lot of natural oil seepage off the coast, that's what they're referring to above.
Zip down to your local hardware or paint store and get some Xylene, it's what car detailers use to get tar off your car, won't hurt your board and slightly less toxic than other products, will melt tar unbelievably fast. Safe for your shower, too. If you're paranoid about solvents use the orange hand cleaner mentioned above, won't work as fast but will eventually get the job done. _________________ Spennie the Wind Junkie
