I am discovering that weed fin is a must.
Any favorites out there? Something that would work at Hecksher? True Ames seems to be the standart, but I hear a lot of people complain that it still catches weed.
thanks

Hi Sasha,
G-sport is probably the best. I would go with the True-Ames Surfgrass as a second choice. i know some guys were complaining about weed but I was getting stuck with the g-sport 2. the fin Dennis mentioned is realy going to hurt the carving characteristics of the board more than the 2 I mentioned. If you only want to go straight it's all good, but if you want to do some nice jibes, go with the G-sport or Surfgrass.
You can try Ocean Air for the G-sport. They don't have it on the website because it's hard to get, but here's a link to the surfgrass.

Yeah, I heard good things about G-sport. But I have not being able to locate one.
The select fins are nice, but the weed ones look real weird...
how about Tangent Dynamic Reaper Weed on Isthmus?
cheers! |

Kraeva, do a forum search on weed fins. There are wide variations in opinions, mainly due to the wide variations in conditions people in the U.S. sail. 90% of the time I use a weeder like many people who post here. However, the conditions I sail differ from those in other parts of the country. Consequently, my opinions will differ from many others. |

Hey Jurg,
Typically you can just look at the fin and know. The one's that are more straight back without much surface area forward won't carve well. If you notice all the weedfins designed for surf use are a bit more upright and forward. The True Ames Surfgrass is the closest I've sailed to the g-sport. The true ames weedspeed was what I used when I used to race and needed a weed fin, but wasn't so fun blasting around or using it in swell. My 1st pick would be the g-sport for the amount of weed at heckscher, then the True-Ames. I'm also ordering a Maui Fins San Carlos Wave for when the weeds aren't too bad but just enough to annoy me. Should be perfect for Hatteras in the spring and fall, and Long Island before the real weeds role in.
I guess at the end of the day you have to decide if you care about the carving characteristcs that you get from a more forward designed fin over something totally raked back to get you through anything. And Sasha, this was by far the worst weed summer I've sen at heckscher in the 15 years I've been sailing there. There was no fin that was doing what it was supposed to. Not even my custom 16 cm g-sport.
Hope this helps,
