Was on my 4.5, 85l at TI today. Having just a grand ole time when, hey, where'd the wind go. Tried to sail up wind for a better spot to land, but everytime I looked, I was further and further away from the island.
Anyway, lost my boom, sail (North Sail) and mast. Hope they drift ashore somewhere where someone finds them. Must'av paddled for an hour.
Reminder to self: When everyone is headed to shore, do the same. |

Finally got in around 6:00, south of the pipe, on the east side around 8th Ave.
I went out around 3:30. So I think it was about 45 min. of fun, 45 of fighting it and an hour of paddleing. |

Wow, that's scary. Since I sail there a lot I should take note. Generally I take off on a long reach and use that first reach to get as far upwind as possible. In a flood I can make a lot of ground between TI and Angel Island. I judge my position each tack and if I end up down by the jetty, I'm done for the day. And I always carry a radio at TI. Nice to sail with friends too.

Sorry to hear about the swim in and lost gear. At least you made it back!
Can you provide a few more details on where you were when the wind shut off and what your strategy was for getting in and how it changed? This is all good stuff for everybody to observe and learn.
IWS was reporting solid wind for TI on Sunday, but I didn't want to sail in the flood. I mostly don't sail the flood b/c it is often really choppy next to the island and in the cove on the flood tide. The currents at TI usually aren't that strong, but yesterday had a really high tide, so that may have been different. Of course even a weak flood will screw you if you're not powered up.
Just a reminder to all of us to respect this spot. I remember being way more cautious sailing here when it was a new experience. Now that I've sailed here so much, I probably take some things for granted that I shouldn't. _________________ Kevin Kan

i was going in around 5:00 at the ramp and saw a green sail slogging well east of the island. was that you? was a bit concerned. glad you made it back. i sailed out on a 5.0 and 95L and was immediately surprised at how underpowered i was, so i turned around and came back. i think it started filling in again around 5:30. most of the solid wind was way out by angel isand. TI can be sketchy. good call ditching your rig and paddling. wondering what the other option is, sail downwind to berkeley and hope for a ride back? |

This relates to an earlier thread.
With the current Chinook or Pryde single bolt bases, I have a hard time getting them off when I'm back at the beach, let alone if I were on the water and getting ready to ditch/paddle. And I don't carry a rubber hammer in my safety kit.
Don't want to start up a single bolt vs double bolt thread, just a plea to the manufacturers to give us more leverage on the single bolt designs. |

fxop, you should try the Streamlined single-bolt base. It is much easier IMHO to tighten and untighten b/c of the wing design. You just get much more leverage. I used to work for NP, and those things were the hardest to get undone. The Chinook was a little better, but not by much.
I use a single bolt base for the ease of adjustability and also b/c I want to move the uni way back in the track on some of my boards... not possible w/ a 2-bolt uni.
