Fred, please don't let close-minded Bay-area hatemongers and attack dogs like Schwandler scare you off; their personal attack are the closest they can get, as individuals, to the outright censorship they lust for. You already appear to know more about the real world than those people do, so keep on keeping on and standing up for what you believe.

You'll notice that none of them has offered a better excuse for why CA is going bankrupt (other than blaming Bush and the Iraq war, which cost peanuts compared to even one piece of Obama Pie.) They're inexplicably incapable of realizing that printing and spending Monopoly money like Bush did and Obama is will bankrupt us, and are incomprehensively unwilling to recognize these park closures as purely political.

It's despicable to me and an insult to CA's U.S.-born and legal immigrant visitors and citizens that your governor is willing to even consider denying those legitimate people access to a feature that enticed many of them to CA, while continuing to provide services costing 65 times (Google it) more taxpayer dollars to people who broke in line by crossing our borders illegally and rushing to CA more for those very welfare programs than for the beaches.

My God.
You people really DON'T get it, do you?
Sadly, that reinforces in bold caps everything the rest of the world understands from real news, moderate talk radio, even "Beach Patrol" on TruTV, where even life guards, let alone rangers and cops, have the power to CLOSE (see below) beaches. Even Fred, who can't even vote yet IIRC, gets it; learn something from him before your state is completely destroyed.

Economics 1 (WAY before 101): When a government runs into a cash shortfall, it selectively threatens popular services to generate an uproar hiding the REAL problem: excess spending. Raising taxes hurts, not helps.

Parks and Recreation 1: “Enter at your own risk” is an “Advisory Closure”. When a facility, whether it's a bathroom or the ocean, is closed, it is ... how shall we say it so you can understand it? …
C L O S E D.
The military calls it, “Off Limits”. It means what is says on both counts.

Government 1: Your governor is Arnold, not Cheney; your president is Obama, not Bush; this is CA, not Iran; the year is 2009, not 2005; Obama has already committed us and our offspring to more spending than the previous 43 presidents COMBINED and Arnold is apparently trying to match him; and your immediate foes are rampant socialism and political correctness, not Al Qaeda (notice that no one criticized pieprick for dredging up war crimes in this thread.) “I did not know that the rangers were actually part of our police force ” says an awful lot about public awareness.

Current Events 1 (apparently censored in Kahlifornya): 220 CA state parks rely on the $143 million in General Fund revenue (i.e., TAXES), because they cannot support themselves. They are not revenue positive. Even if fees were raised on the OTHER 59 parks which COULD support themselves, the public uproar of economic, racial, nationalistic discrimination would drive your next election, WHICH IS THE REASON THE PARKS ARE THREATENED. This entire, specific scenario is neither new nor unique to CA; it's been going on for millennia globally and for centuries in the U.S. One park on the Columbia River 40 minutes from here was closed ... er, C L O S E D ... after which a "buncha guys", literally, bought it and opened it as a private enterprise.

You guys have GOT to start reading something besides surfing mags and watching something more substantive than MTV and more accurate than GETV (aka NBC/MSNBC, aka the totally owned mouthpiece of Jeffrey Immelt). Fred does, and he’s just a KID .. smart, educated KID. Take a lesson! This is about your future, not just left vs right.

Relax pussycat, In our Golden State, a popular site called Treasure Island was "closed", "off limits" for a long time, yet people sailed there all the time. So there are different definitions of "closed".

there was an article in the atlantic monthly this past issue which states, pretty authoratatively, that california is headed for a constitutional convention. all parties agree, both dems and repubs, that the current system of ballot initiative, when tied to gerrymandered congressional seats, results in absolute, complete fiscal legislative stagnation.

i suspect that in the next few months we'll hear rumblings of it and it will be in full swing within a year. which is good. because while i really do like my neighbors, it doesn't mean they're qualified to write legislation which forces the fiscal hand of the state budget.

GOOGLE, guys.
I know it's not Twitter, but it's really not that tough.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about the status of Treasure Island sailing during this transition period from military to civilian control. The most recent word is that as far as the military police are concerned the boat ramp is closed [the MILITARY BOAT RAMP, not the venue]. Since this is the best launch it means Treasure Island is basically closed to sailing. We need to get organized to put some pressure on the authorities to open the boat ramp. I will be posting an Satellite photo of the launch site at http://usafishing.com by tomorrow. Mike Godsey

Mike,

Treasure Island is not closed. The police entities are confused and do not always have the correct information. The SFBA is currently working with the authorities to spread the word and open things up officially.

Sheesh. This stuff takes just SECONDS, guys, and it would save you SO much embarrassment.

ISO, wrong again on all counts. Cal problems could be solved in one motion:get rid of Prop 13. Also, the notion of Califonian companies leaving is crazy, just yesterday Cisco was put into the DOW, and the NASDAQ's largest companies are still right here in CAL, yeah Google has a giant data center in The Dalles, where you live ISO, but thats because the cost of living up there is like a third world nation, so its cheap. Cali's probelms are self inflicted and we will fix them, but Im never leaving, and I doubt the outdoors obssessed people on this web site will either, and the day I move to tri-cities or The Dalles is the day i wake up and shoot myself.
