I saw the dumbest action of my entire life on Highway 14 last week. A hiker had set up his tent for the night ... ON THE HIGHWAY.

For the unfamiliar, Hiway 14 is a winding, relatively narrow, two-lane, two-way highway through the Gorge, and out where I drive it >100 times a year, it's heavily traveled by 18-wheelers blasting through the night. This dimwit's tent was 100% on the pavement, not 10 inches outside the white line the truckers toe. He was standing outside the door flap brushing his teeth, all but invisible in the glare of any oncoming headlights.

Maybe the cops are protecting these people from themselves, and the reason for their vagrancy might be evident.

Have they arrested Isobars yet?

One can only hope.

Last weekend there were more fisherman campers than I'd ever seen near Drano Lake. Only saw one tent though.

It's a fine line between telling all about living in a van in former years, and calling other people who do it 'vagrants'. I see this as the have-nots getting old and settling down and then picking on the current 'have-nots'. In my city, it is very sad to see how the police are removing forclosed peoples sleeping in cars. But they are paid by the surviving property owners. Is that what has happened in this 'hwy 14' area? Nice new homes? Our first year of retirement in our new home on wheels, I regret that we have had similar experiences. Very shameful as we worked a good, honest life.

Read much? T'was Tittyracks, not I, who labeled 'em vagrants.

"What was I doing out there?" Chasing wind, as usual. I don't want creosote in my vehicle. But I did comment to my wife on the ripe pickings along the tracks. I'd bet the cops and RR gendarmes are watching those ties stacked along the tracks for dozens of miles pretty closely.

What! You can't sleep on the pavement? I will fight that in court. This is America. We all should have the right to sleep anywhere we want.
