I been there, what kind info you looking for?

I hooked up with Mistral, stayed on a bed and breakfast type place, on the beach.

Had a car went, and did a little site seeing.

This year going further north to Barcelona to windsurf & kite.

Spain is a cool country....cheap low season and reminds me of Mexico, A bit 3rd world, except for Barcelona and Madrid. Barcelona in my opinion is the best city in Europe but does not have good windsurfing.....but it does have the best Picasso museum.

Hey Dave,
Tarifa is like the Gorge during the summer only warmer. And like the Gorge, July/Aug is prime tourist season so it is crowded in the main spots but if you have a car you can venture a little away from town and get some good sailing. I lived there for almost 10 years and sailed as much and on similar gear to what I use in the Gorge. The waves are better in the winter but the Levante winds coming off the Sahara desert in the summer can be NUKIN'. As mentioned above, Mistral has a high wind center/hotel there where you can stay right on the beach and rent gear. There are other windsurf/kite shops there also.

Happy travels, H2O Joe

We sailed there in July in total nuke conditions for three days. We stayed at Hotel Milon, right on the beach. Great gear and giant port ramps in El Strecho de Gibraltar. I had no problem with crowds since it was so windy.

The locals fish the beach all night and sell their catch to Hotel Milon in the AM. Fresh grilled dorado lunch and back to the waves.

The Tappas in town are great. Cool place to sail all day and then drive into town to hang on the main promenade.

Great siteseeing area too. You should drive up to Ronda with is about a 2 hour drive. It is the epicenter for bullfighting and one of Hemingway's favorite places. They have a horrid torture museum there, makes you a little quesy, but really puts you in touch with what the Inquisition was all about.

Gibraltar is also a great day trip, but don't forget your passport at the hotel, as the Brits won't let you in without it! DOH!!

Sailing Tarifa is BIG!!

You can take a day trip to Morrocco. They take you to places you wouldn't go alone because they have guards along.
You can also sail there. Africa is in sight from the launch maybe 15 miles away. Against the law and some guys die on the way.
Some experience in shorebreak will help a lot in Tarifa You can get advanced lessons on the beach in many disciplines

Yes, Key, we took our rental car on the ferry to Tangers, then drove to Fez over the Rif mountains. We had the coolest time in Fez, though it was pretty creapy. We stayed at the Palaise Jamai which was built for a Morrocan prince and then converted to a Hotel. Beautiful place. We traveled the Old Medina and did the tanery thing. This was in 1998, maybe not so safe now, i dunno. Stayed in Fez about a week, then went to Chefchuen (sp) and Tetuan for a couple days each. The smaller villages and people are really friendly, though we were followed many times. Remember though, to most Moroccans, bilking money out of tourists is a National Sport! Well, bilking Americans out of money is a World Sport! LOL

I'd also recommend a rug selling pitch and presentation in Morocco. It will come to you, don't worry. They are pros and you'll end up shipping a couple home. Just remember not to buy when you are there for the "special" price, we told them we had to check with our friend Tony (actually, our guide book) Then we returned the next day and haggled sportily and made a fair deal. Anyone who has been to Morrocco has a great carpet story.

As regards sailing to Morocco, I went out to the big rollers in the middle of the Strait and was ripping around for a couple hours and was apparently out of site of the rental guys. They were on the beach having a heart attack and telling my wife I was lost and on my way to the Canary Islands, thus giving her a heart attack, but she told them I was probably OK. When I got back to shore I got the big lecture, but they were stoked that I ventured out to the shipping lane and made it and back. What they didn't know is that I saw the ferry as a target and gave the top deck a little Americano action, hell yea, Angry 4.0, rip, slash, and air! Looking back, it was probably not wise, but the terrain out there was irresistable. Like some of our 3-4 mile reaches out into the Pacific. I did finally stop doing that, but those chunky swells out there still call my name.

Sorry for the long post, but it was sure fun reliving that trip today.

Safe Travels!!!
