In winter some dedicated windsurfers turn to snowsailing. A "Snowfer" (http://www.snowfer.com/indexb.html) can be used on ice or packed snow. It's even a Canadian invention. My windsurfing budget hasn't allowed me to get one yet, because I only get in about 4-6 snowsailing sessions in a winter. I've used a modified tobaggon for 14 seasons. I'm certainly not as fast as a Snowfer, and my cheap angle iron "blades" are only good enough to keep me from sliding sideways on ice. If you can afford it, get a Snowfer. If you can't, make do with something like a modified tobaggon. A seriously damaged tobaggon will work as long as you can rescue 1/3 or more of the normal width. Add some plywood to give yourself something to which a mast base can be attached.

What ever you use as your ride for snowsailing you need a very serious helmet. My used motorcycle helmet has saved me from serious injury. All falls on snow or ice are hard falls. And the slickness of the surface means totally unexpected falls are more common no matter how experienced you are.

My first windsurfing lessons were in 1984. My first snowsailing was in January 1995.
