No doubt in my mind, the sail rig must be connected to the hull or board to be a sailing craft.

It is connected idiot. It's connected by the human universal joint. If it wasn't connected it would just drift down wind. Give credit, you try going 50 knots on a kite board.. It's very hard to go fast on a kite, much harder than on a sailboard.

i must take exception to your terminology, "idiot";
this is/was becoming an interesting thread (taking
our minds off the winter doldrums, and is not furthered
by childish name calling.

the kite is attached to the human, not the vessel; albeit
a moot or regardless point

take care,

Thanks dogalone for your comments.

Just for the record blireef, I have nothing against kiters, or the fact that a kiter went over 50 knots. Furthermore, I wasn't trivializing the feat, or saying windsurfing is better than kiting. Seems we simply have a difference of opinion about what a sailing craft is.

You might want to take that chip off your shoulder, and chill out a bit.

It seems to me that Speed Kitesurfing may not be as hard as suggested above; To wit; The windsurfers and Cat sailers have been at this for decades and have built specialized gear for it. There are a few true experts in both who can play with the big boys etc. The bad news, it seems, is that with but a few short years and a small amount of exploration of an ideal location, a kiter in seemingly off the rack gear has taken the lead. Fred Haywood says he still has pain in his neck from the hardest fall of his entire life; I have nothing but admiration for all these people, what's next; the pools at Caesars?

KA Sailing won the World championship since 2006 every year, the guys sailing the boats are pretty good in it and as you see there top speed is already in the 27 knots range.

Kite speed sailing I never tried out but from how it looks I think it is harder to Speed Windsurf. From Videos I have seen the Kite guys sail in super flat water aka no chop aka easier. If they sail in bigger chop they will fly more and have less leverage with the fins and I would assume will limit there top speed.
The speed however is impressive and instead to call each other names we should push the boundaries in our Wind sport's (Kiting, Sailing and Windsurfing.

Hang loose
