What's the latest on launching from Treasure Island this season? Is the parking lot open to sailors yet or is it still a toxic material transfer station?

I believe they are saying June before the parking lot is open. Don't hold your breath. We've sailed it anyway, it works well on an ebb. Launch at the end of 13 St. You need to carry your gear down the large rocks, push off and ride the "elevator" to the wind line. The Elevator is the current created by the ebb. Without that, I don't think you could overcome the current and make it out. So only on an ebb. Coming back, aim low, about 50 yards from the rocks, get as much speed as possible and then crank upwind to the island at the last minute. Swim the last 10-20 feet in.

Try to find company if you're going, it's not the kind of place you'd want to be by yourself for a variety of reasons, not all having to do with water.

I've sailed up on Formula gear several times this week. The good news is that they are working, so whatever weather delays held them up are over. They are using the path on the rip-rap as a haul road, so it isn't really practical to use the lot. Let's keep our fingers crossed about June.

Any news lately, up or down? Any speculation on June (or later) potential w/s access? Thanks!

The last time I talked to them, Navy says don't write off a June completion but don't count on it. I'm praying but not betting.

I went on Saturday, hoping to ride the last of the ebb out to the windline and sail back in on the flood. Chart said slack was at 5:19 PM, and we noticed the flood along the launch at 4:30. So it appears the ebb current that carries you out to the windline switches to a flood current an hour before expected. So try to get there before the end of the flood.

Get used to that launch-latest word I saw was that the work is supposed to last through September. (Great job Navy Evil or Very Mad ) Other cleanup in the area may or may not affect access to this launch in the years to come which would be a real shame.

Looks like fall 2008 or Spring 2009 for the old launch. I got the following recently from SFBA Mac -

From: "Sullivan, James B CIV OASN (I&E) BRAC PMO West" <james.b.sullivan2@navy.mil>
To: <macmcgrath@comcast.net>, <thorner@sfba.org>
Subject: Treasure Island Remediation
Date: Fri, 23 May 2008 22:46:01 +0000

Mr. McGrath and Mr. Thorner,
Peter Thorner had also called me about a month ago regarding the project
completion date for the remediation, and I told Peter that I expected to
have more information by the end of May.

This being close enough to the end of May, I can tell you that the most
up to date information on the project schedule is that we cannot be very
precise about the schedule, given the nature of the soil cleanup, which
now includes radiological material. The cleanup has been an iterative
process of excavation, sampling and analysis involving the Navy, the
Regulatory Agencies and the City. It has been the radiological work
that has extended the project schedule.

The current estimate would be completion in the September/October 2008
timeframe, subject to any change in conditions or project plans.

I had also mentioned to Peter last year that there are two other cleanup
sites bracketing the parking lot area: Site 6 and Site 32. There will
be future cleanup work at these two sites, as well as additional cleanup
work in the TI housing area, but that work has not yet been planned out
or scheduled.

The Navy will be providing continued updates at our Restoration Advisory
Board (RAB) meetings on June 17th, August 19th and October 21st at 7:00
p.m. at the Casa de la Vista on Treasure Island.

I do not know what the Treasure Island Development Authority's plans are
for the parking lot and boatramp area once this particular remediation
project is completed, so I can only speak to our project schedule.

Mr. Sullivan--I frequently get asked about when the remediation at
Treasure Island that has closed the windsurfing launching area will be
completed. It is about 9 months late at this point, and the last I
heard was the end of June. Is there any better information?

There is some serious potential for us to lose access to this site AGAIN if we are not proactive. Navy really couldn't give a crap about us to be honest.

Seems like we should contact our U.S. Representatives and voice our concern. I can see that there's not much we can do about the current remediation, but we'd like to make sure we aren't frozen out of the debate when they decide how to use the area for the future remediation projects.
