That would be a funny twist of the times as a bulk of the original windsurfers in the late 70s to early 80s were taken from the various Hobie Cat sailors.

Been out in some similar surf with winds as light as 5-10 knots. Rides like this are as good as it gets. Cheers.

Cats can be great fun mostly in breezes of 12-20mph, and easily coast along in lighter winds.
But cats in SFBay tend to self destruct from the twisting caused by deep water chop, and they are even harder to transport than the biggest windsurfing rigs.
With advent of Formula and lite wind slalom gear, winds from 8-15mph can still be solid planing material and boatspeeds easily top 23mph in those conditions....making Hobies hopelssly slow and boring.

have you guys heard of kiteboarding? its a cool new sport where like we use a kite and strings and it fits in a back pack and it goes fast in 10mph of wind. and with 12mph of wind you can jump 20 feet. yeah you should google it they have some info on it on the web for light wind fun.

Tell the driver to lift you up by the rope, and that's how it feels..."look at me, I'm lifted up by ropes and I'm so cool I can do TRICKS too!....
"Buy this year's kite....it has soooo much more wind range, turns faster and quicker, rigs faster, you'll never go back to the old stuff again"......
Hindenbergs are fun, in breeze below 7mph, or when the winds drop 10mph suddenly. Nice floaty board to sit on too....
I always like to rely on a beachgoer to help launch and land my kite.

Kites do not work in 10-12 A solid 12 is the min wind
I do both windsurfing and kiting so I know.
10-12 is perfect for light wind freestyle and or longbording flats or waves

I do not think one is better than the other each has its time and place

Sailing hobies is a blast as well. Spent many great days on the hobie 16.

Kites scare the crap out of me...besides I've never seen consistent enough conditions up on our little lake here that would make the investment worthwile (at least when the wind dies I can paddle back with a board).

Now a Hobie that's a different story. I loved my 14 Turbo. you could take a small bag of stuff (even a tent), sail out to an island for a while and camp and even have loads of fun on the way there and back.

I towed it with my wife's Oldsmobile Cutlass and setup took no longer than rigging a sail on a windsurfer (I had a trailer with a winch that made stepping the mast a breeze).
