Hi,

Just moved to the area, I was wondering if any other 170-175lbers could tell me what the best B&B sail size is for the bay?

A 5.0 is about right for me in 20-25? Is that the ticket? Would a 5.2 or 5.3 be better? Can you get away with a 4.7?

Thanks in advance...

you need two: 4.5 , 5.0 and you're set for life.BUT , in Spring you'll need a 4.0 . so I guess you need three.

I weigh right about in your range and my most used sail by far is a 5.4. I guess it all depends on where you sail. I sail Berkeley a lot so that may say everything. If you go to Sherman, more like a 4.7 or 4.2. 3rd as the season heats up down there, I guess I use my 4.7 more.

I guess my advice is 4.7 and a 5.4 and you can't go wrong (toss in a 4.2 and you're good-to-go).

Caveat emptor: If you want to extend your sailing days, then toss in a 6.5... But then I guess the formula guys will chime in and say somethin' about sailing all year... Then that will start a kite-fight...

Oh lordy, I'm gettin' outta here while the gettin's good. Wink

I'll probably mostly sail Candlestick, Coyote, 3rd and Crissy if that's of any significance...

With equipment this cheap in the bay area:

you may as well get a quiver of sails. You're better off with a correct sized 4 year old sail then with a brand new sails that's too big/small.
Invest in a good mast that fits lots of brands and then build your rig around it making sure it's the right size and bend.
If you're really budget conscious you could get a used regular diameter mast and save a lot of cash that way.

5.0 and 85 liter board and you should be able to cover 80% of your sessions.

Andy-I go to the Gorge because it is generally windier and warmer than down here and a great, relatively cheap (until $4.50/gallon gas showed up) vacation. The swell is pretty nice as well.

Yeah, i forgot the water does not warm up much in the bay. I didn't think people would travel to the gorge from SF just for 3.5 days (overated). I love going to Maui or OR coast, but I can't get used to the salt water.
