Anybody know of windsurfing/kiting sites in or near Morro Bay? Where do the boardheads on the central coast do their thing? Any consistent winds like in the Bay Area?

I heard Arroyo Laguna near Hearst Castle gets really good (side-off wavesailing). I have heard of people sailing Cayucos and Morro but unsure of the conditions. Another spot is Jalama Beach. I have sailed Pismo Beach (onshore wavesailing) which can get really windy but a little tricky for windsurfing due to onshore wind. If you are into sailing ponds, Lopez Lake is right near Pismo.

Arroyo Laguna is a great spot. Great sailing, amazing location and a nice crowd to add.

Actually pretty hard to beat, especially when there is swell.

driving back from Santa Barbara I've seen people sailing Cayucos (more kiting than windsurfing) and Morro Bay just below Hearst Castle. One of my buddies sailed Arroyo Laguna (Piedras Blancas) about a moth ago.

Arroyo is the best spot. Today and tomorrow there is a south swell. Should be good.

No question, Arroyo Laguna is the crown jewel of the area. It's located about a mile and a half beyond the turn off to Hearst Castle. It's a good spot for surf, and it also has some interesting sailing off the outer kelp beds slightly north of main venue. In some years, the outer kelp beds set up a great speed run where you can race right up next to the kelp. The kelp beds are so thick that virtually eliminate the wind chop creating very smooth water.

There's another wave spot just a few miles further north just a bit below the Piedros Blancas lighthouse, but the beach can be covered with Elephant Seals, making it sort of off limits. Also, with so many seals both onshore and on the rocky shelf areas further outside, it's a bit spooky because you know Whitey could be lurking around.

A lot of kiters like to hang out right at the north end of the motel strip located approximately half way between Cambria and San Simeon State Beach (at the turn off to the castle). I can't remember whether it Little Pico Creek or Pico Creek, but it's a favored kite launch. I have never seen anybody windsurf there, as the wind generally is more onshore than Arroyo Laguna, which is reliably sideoff and usually offering much stronger wind on average.

I have never seen any windsurfing or kiting south of the motel strip, but it could be that kiters are fanning into newer spots that really aren't that favorable for windsurfing. I've found that the beaches south of Cayucos tend to be generally light up and down wind that not dependable.

Lastly, I've heard that folks sometimes sail in the protected bay/harbor area adjacent to Morro Rock, but it can be quite shallow in areas, especially at low tide.

Morro Bay can be a spectacular place to sail if the stars are alligned. I have launched at the south end of the waterfront at the boat launch. Sail at high tide and get out when the boats begin to turn. If you wait too long to get out the boat launch can destroy your equipment with the flow that runs under the docks. I have seen people launch further south by the golf course, safer but not as interesting sailing. There are hot showers by the boat launch area.
